Mourning a Friend

Blog Posted:12/22/2023 2:56:00 AM

L Milton Hankins was a wonderful friend to many of us. Today marks one year since his passing. Tom Cunningham has honored him with a new Milton Creek Saga that I'm sure will be read and appreciated for Tom's skill of storytelling, as well as a sincere tribute to Milt.  He was a gentle man who advocated peace, but stood his ground for the right that everyone's opinion be heard.

Fate took Milt away without him being able to say adieu, and for us not to return his farewell.  Perhaps it's a kinder way... not knowing when the time has come. His life was extinguished but a spark remains in our memories, embers that will forever glow in our hearts. No one will ever replace him or sit in his chair in Milton Creek.

In his memory, I've included one of Milt's poems.  I feel it's one of many he wrote that conveys his life, his beliefs and his love.

Those Last Few Moments

In those last few moments of this journey
When my life passes before my eyes,
I see a childhood mixed with misery and joy
Overall, I think I was a mostly happy boy.

But I will also see a lad full of determination
To be more successful than anyone ever thought
And so, many victories in my life will flash past
They are the most important things that last.

I will see them, the ones I have dearly loved
Experiencing places, things we shared in kind,
Memories were made that will never go away
Because I am leaving the best of them behind.

Most of all, I look forward to seeing her face
Who shared most of my best times on earth,
I think I shall see her waiting there for me
As I make the journey into that fond eternity.

Thank you very much, Smita. Milt deserved to be remembered.

This is such a tender tribute to your dear friend Lin. Milton was amazing, and highly respected here on the soup. This poem you selected is incredibly precious as he looked to the eternal realm of his life and knowing it would go on even though the earthly phase of existence was finishing up. It is sweet that his eyes were already focusing on heaven in eagerness to see his beloved wife, waiting for him. It is hard to lose a dear friend or loved one. You have so beautifully honored his memory in sharing this post. Hugs and blessings to you Lin <3

Thank you, BJ. I'm so pleased to read your kind words about Milt. He held many roles in life, and was a man admired by so many. He often spoke of Deb and their travels.

Although I didn't personally know Milt, my hubby did; he spoke highly of him and his kind spirit. From the beginning Milt encouraged Bill as he learned about PS and about writing effectively Thanks for sharing this, Lin.

Thank you, Sara. Milt would’ve loved your poetry and your kindness to others. I admire that about you, too.

Yes, Milt was special, full of life, courteous, an excellent poet, perfectionist, full of spiritual fervour and zest for life. He authored a book too, looking at nuances of Christianity as a religion.

A lovely tribute, Lin! Milt left an indelible mark in this life with his ministry, his family, his writing, his dedication to PS and his many friends here in the soup. As long as one person remembers a departed one who is loved, they are not really gone or forgotten. Thank you for remembering! Blessings of the Christmas season to you!

Thanks for posting this blog, Lin. Milt was a one-of-a-kind type of guy. He was one of a handful of people here on Poetry Soup that welcomed me and befriended me that first week. He was a dear friend, that read and commented on almost ever poem I wrote. We soup mailed every couple of days for the 14 months I was here before he passed. We had some great discussions on topics we had different opinions on. I miss him dearly, may he rest in peace. Thanks for sharing the poem, I only have the dozens of FAVs. Merry Christman my friend, Bill

He really was a very special gentleman. It speaks highly of his reputation that so many poets respected him enough to comment on this blog and on Tom’s ‘Milton Creek Saga.’ Thank you, Bill.

Thank you so much for adding your thoughts. Deb. He was a friend to all who would accept his hand, offered it to those who were closed-minded. Next time you’re in the saloon, smile up at his chair.

A lovely tribute to our sadly lost elder statesman, Lin. I feel that Milt did say his adieu in that final, seemingly cryptic poem on Soup. Those words, ‘Bye bye, don’t cry’ sent a tingle down my spine before the news of his passing reached us. Historians can keep their ’Kiss me, Hardy’: Milt gets my vote for bravest last quote.

Milt was a very special friend to so many of us, so it's fitting that Tom's 'Milton Creek Saga' and this blog serve as a reminder that he's missed. Thank you, Mark, for being among those of us who respected him as a friend and a poet.

Thank you, Linda. He was humble and kind, even to those who were haughty, and always stood behind his ideals. He didn't hesitate to speak up for his friends. Milt deserves to be remembered within our community, and always in the Creek.

Lin, you have penned a beautiful blog in honor our our Milt, I miss him too! He was a wonderful kind man. Like Tom, pointed out in his comment, in his last poem, he wrote, "bye bye don't cry." I used those words in my tribute poem to him after his death, writing" but that is all I do." And the poem you posted of Milt's is fantastic, I will for sure go read Tom's lastest Milton Creek poem, blessings

Constance, I recall your poetic tribute to Milt, and those of all the others who loved him and appreciated the gentle man that he was. I didn't think responding to these comments would affect me, but they are, and that's as it should be. Thank you for your kind memories of Milt.
Date: 12/22/2023 5:22:00 AM
We certainly won't forget him, he supported so many on here and left such a huge void when he passed away. I sometimes think of his last poem on here (I need a vacation) his last four words were, bye bye, don't cry, I often wonder did he know. Lovely blog Lin, honouring a fine poet and a gentleman. Tom

I can't bear to read that one, Tom. He knew the problems of his ill health, but I can assure you that Milt had no idea his death was imminent, but oh how fitting were those final words he left for us. Thank you for your tribute saga of Milton Creek and your sentimental comments here.
Date: 12/22/2023 4:17:00 AM
His memory will live on through your wonderful tribute and it was a brilliant idea to post one of his poems with your blog. He was a dear friend to so many on soup and is sadly missed. I can't wait to read the latest installment in the Milton Creek Saga. hugs Jan xx

Time moves more quickly than we'd like it to. He was always kind, even to those who provoked him, but that was their loss. He was a good man who believed in finding something positive in all situations and he's missed so very much. Thank, Tania. I've been reading him a lot, lately.
