I guess you could say I'm a citizen of the world. I've traveled....and I've lived parts of my life in Iran, Lebanon, the US, and Cyprus. I am proud of my Armenian heritage. I was born in Tehran, Iran and soon after that, my family went to the States for my dad to work on his MA degree and many years later, to work on his Ed.D. I have a lot of the Middle East and the West in me, and at times....I feel confused about my identity. I do, however, cling to my Armenian roots and am outspoken about recognition by the world of the Armenian Genocide that took place over 100 years ago.

Since my parents had no common language, the language spoken in our home was English. Yes, I am most fluent in English, and I think, dream, and converse in that language, though I do speak 5 other languages to varying degrees! :)

I am melancholy/sanguine by nature and feel everything very keenly. My highs are SUPER HIGH...and my lows...SUPER LOW! I guess you could say...I'm INTENSE. I'm passionate about poetry to the point of obsession.

The events that have colored my life are the death of my mother due to MS and the war in Lebanon. As a child, it was hard for me to come to grips with the fact that my mother was ill, and to see her go from being a vibrant, well-loved teacher to a wheelchair bound, isolated woman was a very harrowing experience. I do believe, though, that there is a resurrection day and that, by His grace, I will see my Mama fully restored...free of wheelchair, able to sing, laugh, and smile again. The war in Lebanon...bombs landing all around, nights spent in bomb shelters.. has also scarred me to some degree.

What I'm most proud of? That would be my daughter...Shereen Natalie Ghali. She is the light of my life. Her name in Farsi means SWEET! :)

Currently, I teach English at Middle East University in Beirut, Lebanon. Poetry Soup has been a haven for me....most of the time! ;) I've developed amazing friendships here that are very genuine and real. My dream is to one day have my name on a volume of poetry! One can always dream....Thank you for making the effort to get acquainted. God bless!

There is a young American student in my Reading Club who has taken two classes I taught last semester. This young man is a tremendous writer. I never thought I had much of an impact on him. After the surprise party the Reading Club threw for me, this student helped carry things to my office. After he had gone, I noticed a note on my desk. It reads:

I have always believed in the power of words. Their sway over man can bring a person to the depths of despair and then in the next instant to the heights of joy. The human soul listens in utter rapture to the words of a powerful song. It reads the words of a great writer and is transfixed. The Word of God transforms lives. There are such varities of words and combinations of words to convey a single thought that the possibilities are endless.

Yet, I am at a loss for words. How can I put into words the impact that you have on this school? I have never met a teacher that not only shows the need for words, but also the beauty of them. You have such passion for words that is infectious to those around you. And it is those around you that you most care about. No matter what is happening in your own life, you always have time to encourage those you come into contact with. It is a gift.

I am looking forward to the day when I am walking through a bookstore and see your name on a book. I know it will happen. You are too fantastic of a writer for it not to. Each word you use fits perfectly with the next. A pearl threaded on to a golden strand could not be better placed. It is so inspirting to see that with all your talent, you don't use it to uplift yourself. You use your work to bring out important issues and to call for change. It is truly amazing.

You have made a huge difference in my life and I wish you many more years to do the same for others.

I sat in my office and just cried and cried. It was one of the BEST gifts I have gotten this birthday! Words are powerful and can bring SO much joy or sorrow. I will treasure this gift for the rest of my life, and I wanted to share it with you.

Another bit of information: I'm on youtube now! You can find me under Eileen Manassian. I'm doing a short poetry segment entitled "Rhymes of the Times" I only have two segments up for now. If you want to have a see...go ahead. Remember....I am a BIG girl who has a BIG heart....among other things! The first couple of segments have been recorded in my back yard...I got the help of two of my students who have time constraints, so....I wasn't too particular on editing. The first segment is just an inroduction to the program...and the second one is one of my poems that won first place in Mystic Rose's Valentine contest. I haven't advertised it on FB yet, nor to my students except for a few. Aside from my family....you are the first to know. I also make mention of POETRY SOUP! Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Eileen! First off-- congratulations to you and your Rhymes of the Times team for pulling off these videos :) I think it's so cool how you capture your viewers-- I enjoy how you are animated when you talk and your voice is so rich and you are so expressive! You're a natural beauty in front of the camera. I will be checking out your future episodes! Can I just give a quick suggestion? Maybe the background audio once you start reading can be lowered down a bit? For me, it sort of competes with your reading, and just me, I get a wee bit distracted by it... pls do continue on with your videos, I really enjoyed watching you and being able to see you!

Yes, dear....I noticed that too. I will ask that that correction be made. Also, the music in the love episode was not matching the speed at which I was reading. I was not involved in the music selection, and I didn't want to be too picky because these students are pressed for time. Thanks for the suggestions, though. I'm thrilled you took the time to view. I have kept lovely, touching notes from my ex students, but none compare to this one! ~ I have checked you out on You Tube, and with all honesty I can describe what I saw and heard as excellent. These are lovely words, Becca. Thank you. It honestly took a lot out of me to put myself out there...do to the way I feel about myself at this stage of my life. It's ok. If I wait till I "lose weight"...I'd wait a jolly long time, wouldn't I? ;) I'm not sure if it will continue or not...I'm just glad at least I tried. I'm planning to post one every Thursday. When I sing in church, if go flat on some of the notes, she'll let me know...so I value her opinion. She's so proud of this that she's shared the link on youtube! :) I'm so happy. :) Thanks, sweetie...I've struggled with weight issues all my life. An under-active thyroid and antidepressants (enhancer of the appetite) don't help the situation...I'm going to try to reduce, but when I'm alone and depressed...I turn to food for comfort and it's an endless cycle. :( Anyhow...Thanks for the positive review. :) I'm going to ask my student to post the third one up tomorrow. Under your video click the share button. There will be an URL that shows up, above that there is a tab call "embedded" click on there, a new http will appear. Copy that. Go into edit poems and paste that into the embedded YouTube video box. Then update

Dear Connie...I'm so grateful for your visit to this blog and to the youtube videos. It wasn't easy for me to go through with it due to my body image issues. I've had this dream for quite some time and talked to my student about it...but kept putting it off. Then I decided to do it on my bday...Can't leave something unfulfilled. Days are passing. Yes, this letter from Michael will be one that I cherish always. He spoke to my heart when I was feeling low. You must be so proud of your daughter, dear. :) So grateful that you took the time to watch...I'm a little nervous about it all, but it's been something that I've wanted to do for some time. I have four more to post and then the next set we will record in the University Library...there is a beautiful jacaranda tree in bloom that can be seen through the window. :) Thanks, Rob. God knows I needed it. I've been overwhelmed by student support these past couple of days. My family is away for my bday, and I was severely depressed. I enjoyed 7 different birthday parties, this note and an acrostic one by another student, messages, and a blog....I think God knew I needed words of affirmation to tide me over this tough patch. wow, Eileen, I just viewed both video. AMAZING work by you and your camera person in your back yard. GREAT sound and you have a melodious voice. It's one of the best readings of a poem I have heard. Also congrats on that sweet letter you received from a student. I have had very few students care about my poetry, but the few that did made me feel wonderful!! (I don't teach poetry like I imagine you do. It must be so fun to have students with you that want to learn about poetry)

I guess I'm just feeling the water...My students know I'm not an expert. I keep telling them we are on learning journey together...and often, their work just amazes me. :) I'm glad that you had some students who appreciated your amazing gift, Andrea. I'm just a silly goose who is in love with words, Arthur. Poetry allows me to live alternate lives, experience things I would not have the opportunity otherwise. I always encourage my kids to strive to go beyond mediocrity. Some do...As for cake...the students in EACH of my 4 classes three we a party...as did my Reading Club...and the university faculty...So, there was LOTS of cake! If I could have saved you some...I surely would have, dear.

As you can see from the youtube vid, I AM a big girl...I wasn't always like that, but...there are many contributing factors that I need to deal with before I can have the nice end result the girl in your poem did.
