The accompanying youtube video of 4.5 minutes may change the way you look at doors and the world at large. It's a favorite of mine and provides context for the limerick below:

The push-pull that provides rapport
Could faith in designers restore
More sense of our choice
Tempts us to rejoice
And make love not war with their door

Do doors keep people.out, or do they let them in? I enjoy this limerick.

Hilda, good question! Perhaps they do more than both of these things. Hopefully, they don’t confuse us!

Dear Duke, yes, the video is amazing! I always thought I was the only one who was confused by doors lol! Thank you for letting me know it's not me. Your fun and fantastic limerick captures the spirit of the door dilemma with witty finesse and a great last line! Great video too. Warmest wishes my poet friend.. ~Susan

Thanks Susan, I thought this would be worth sharing since many of us feel stupid because of bad designs. Not our fault.

This clever limerick highlights the importance of thoughtful design in shaping human experiences and interactions. The "push-pull" metaphor adeptly captures the interactive nature of good design, suggesting that faith in designers can restore a sense of agency and choice

Kim, you are very welcome, and yes, there is a lot to think about regarding how we relate to things in this world. I had seen this video a long time ago and only recently realized it could be of interest to poets!

Hi Duke, the design of a door, a computer, a photostat machine, a mug, a car, a house, a fork, a spoon I could go on forever, should be user friendly and the push-pull theory will therefore have a good rapport between the designer and the user. It is so understandable what one should do with a chair, sit on it, or a human emotion like laughing, it is spontaneous and one doesn't have to be told to laugh or have a sign that says laugh. Human interactions within a family and in life generally, is an expected form of unity. The push pull concept should not have to be instructed but understood, like the door, signs saying push or pull. Blessings, Jennifer.

Jennifer, you have a very nice way of saying that we should have a good relationship with the people and things we come in contact with. When we have that by instinct or it becomes part of our behavioral pattern, we certainly make the world a more pleasant place to be in. It doesn't take too much really...just a bit of awareness. Your comment was so insightful...it's making me laugh...smiling about it all this very minute.

Make love not war, that line stood out for me dear duke, sometimes we forget theres always some good in every door, may be designed not to our liking but still.. if we look at things from a different perspective we will find so much we can appreciate and rejoice. Pleasure reading this! Sending you light

IE, yes as every door lets us travel from one place to another. We want to have a happy relationship with the world around us for sure and finding something positive reflects a optimistic person. Hope you are feeling well!!

I am in a dentist office. Otherwise I'd see your video. Will try to see it later. Cute limerick, Duke. I think you have more optimism than I do. I watch too many true crime stories to believe we can fix the miserable people that pass for human in this world.

Andrea, I do hope you get to see the video...It's a very unusual one. What you say is very interesting. We're definitely affected by stories. The true crime stories tend to focus on the worst aspects of a small group of dysfunctional people--generally murderers. I am of the belief that the "true" crime and worst acts occur at the highest level and those crimes rarely get the kind of attention needed. I don't know that I am optimistic...I try to be a realist. The video attached to this poem is an example of something good, but it doesn't address many bad things taking place in the country and planet. No shortage of those. You do write some very positive poems, but I get how you feel.

Your limerick poem, dear Duke, is truly fascinating. It beautifully explores the idea of design's ability to unite people and foster harmony, while also delving into the interconnectedness of design, choice, and the potential for peace. Your choice of words such as "push-pull," "rapport," "restore," "rejoice," and "war" effectively conveys the theme of tension and resolution. Through skillful word selection and the use of alliteration, you highlight the importance of finding balance and harmony through design.

SP, I really love your analysis and interpretation, which is exactly on target. There are a lot of little things we could do to make our lives easier on a daily basis. It actually would reflect a respect for all of us who use physical devices and interact with them and each other in space. I see it also as a model for how we relate to each other in our relationships, which you noted so elegantly. You are a real asset on this site, sir!!!

I get frustrated with doors like that. I always prefer the ones that just open when they sense someone close. However, that can't work for every space so yeah. Pull, push... Even the signals are stressful sometimes because my brain hears the opposite. Nice video and that's how people come up with solutions, fixing problems that other solution causes.

Tonye, I am so pleased you took the effort to watch the video. I was talking to a philosophy professor at our college reunion this past week and I asked what his books discuss. It was how to define/establish a utopia. His idea was we get a better society through small improvements of what we have and not by definition of an absolute ideal. So, perhaps how to make small improvements is pretty important!!

Thought provoking limerick Duke, one thing for sure, life's not always easy. Hope you're keeping well, just back from Turkey. Tom

Tom, welcome back. You were missed, but I am sure you had a good time! It's nice to be able to travel and enjoy. I am well. I went to my 50th college reunion and met a lot of people I never knew. It was a tremendous boost really. I hope you and your wife are feeling well and relaxed!

Duke, love it! I'll say it again...doors that are extremely heavy in public bathrooms, knobs that don't hold your towel up in gyms, sliding doors in bathtubs that annoy, cold & hot switched around to confuse, let's not stop there, we are trapped in mazes, fences, gates, islands, slow down bumps and humps. Annoying! What has happened is easy & cheap fixes are mandatory for these engineers.

Anaya, I am with you on this. Since I watched that video, I've noticed bad design more and more. It is everywhere. I don't think we are going to be free from it anytime soon. At least we can laugh about it!!

Hello Duke, your limerick packs a profound punch! The video context adds layers of meaning to the clever wordplay. The "push-pull" of faith and choice, rejoicing in design - it prompts deep reflection. You've crafted a deceptively simple yet richly philosophical piece. Bravo for making us ponder life's biggest questions through deft rhymes! - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Daniel, Thanks so much for commenting, and I hope you had a chance to watch the short video. There are indeed different things to take from this, and I sincerely appreciate your pointing that out--especially to me. I had originally just meant the push-pull to refer to doors, but there is more to all of this. It applies to the give and take we all have. You are very perceptive on so many levels. I am anxiously waiting for the next episode of your red series!!
