Sockdologizing Old Man Trap

Daniel Henry Rodgers

"Our lies can claim the moment, I say truth owns the future standing firm like a mountain against the tide. Deceit can paint a picture for a while, I say only truth can reveal the masterpiece beneath. The truth doesn’t demand our belief, I say it exists whether we choose to see it or not." - Daniel Henry Rodgers

(this is not about anyone in particular, political, social, or news outlets or not, and should not be construed that way, but as a whole.)

====================

You sockdologizing old man-trap long decayed where claws curl tight in dust and brittle bone your lies are hyenas dancing in the flame their jaws a rattle tearing flesh to stone their laughter cracks the silence and the name of truth that bleeds until the world has grown as hollow as the bones they gnaw upon each tooth a dagger that breaks the heart to dawn beneath your skin a hunger spills and swells its teeth are rust its eyes a fevered glow it gnashes bone until the broken tells of sins that fester deep where no one knows your hollow self a wind that pulls and wells the hunger of a lion’s endless throes and in your voice a low and raspy cry that cracks the earth and cracks the brittle sky beneath the skin your hunger splits the bone its grasp a vice that crushes what it seeks the stars fall silent cold and overthrown their light consumed in frantic, bloodstreaked streaks the air is thick with death and poisoned stone where hunger howls beneath the shadowed peaks yet still in your trap the pulse of truth will grind a seed that's sown then left to twist and rise your walls of lies are dust beneath the weight of hunger’s edge and all that once was wise though still you chase the fading spark of fate your fingers crushed beneath the weight of mind from soil once cursed where hate was built to last the truth will rise unbroken and unmasked for lies may hunt but truth though torn and scarred is cut deep and rips your sockdologizing heart trap apart

Booth waited for the laughter to muffle the sound of the Darringer, a new and funny word you brought us . The truth shall set us free , a reminder of the many who are suffering within, Daniel your resolve and faith is sturdy, clear, and roundly respected. Interesting art you've chosen, I got a kick out of it!

Dear Anaya, Another soul-filling comments. Yes, it is an interesting word and the reality of how it was used then to cover the real truth that brought forth death. I am with you that so many suffer and need our support to speak to those that would listen. The picture that I created was to show how hyenas are interesting characters but the truth is that they go after the weak and dying. Our faith will set us free. Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The truth is but a bodyguard of lies. Always think we start the day off lying, then just continue throughout the day. It's when people hit you with the stark truth, you begin to wonder why they didn't lie to you.

Hello Paul, you are right that many just start their days with a lie and continue to progess throughout the day. The good news is their is a truth that is absolute and I believe many reject that but it would be a self-defeating argument. I always appreciate your thoughts. Thank You! Winter Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Wow what a sockdologizing swinging swipe at The lies..' That are not right. Do not sit tight.' Or Give comfort right.' Its like (when did wicked?) Euphamise the word good.?? Or try to euthanize? Many mis-representings since the 1980s arose.' Egregious wounding carried in Prose.' In narrative negative.' In callous den-egrative..Hope for the better.' Put better spirit to The letters..' Enough for now; thsnks for posting Anyhow.'

Dear Sally, I am so happy to see that you love the poem. We are all looking for the truth although we may not be content knowing the truth for it will expose our own thoughts that are not based on truth. Yes, It will all be revealed in the 2nd coming. Amen!! Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Dear Andrea, Sorry for my delay response. I have been fighting COVID all week but I think I am getting better. I totally agree with you that it could fit any sin as you said and it truly is a human issue that is ongoing since the Garden of Eden. Thank you so much for your warm comments. Daniel, a finished draft (breeze and mind-conscription) from history! Interesting concept you've noted--a man trap and all the accompanying decay. The facts may speak for themselves, but we have to be careful detectives to see what's really in front of us. I believe a "really big lie" (as opposed to the "big lie" concerning the 2020 election) are the corporate balance sheets (and our laws of economics) that that ignore nature as the source of wealth that's largely borrowed from everyone and everything. It's the lie of the cornucopians (a real word too). I am actually struck by your choice of a man-hyena as well as having him painting. It's really funny as well as striking and thought-provoking.

Hello Duke, sorry for my delayed response. I have been fighting COVID all week, and I believe I may be nearing the end of its cycle. I really like what you said about lies being a cornucopia of former generational lies that go back to when humans started to walk the earth. I knew my poem reeked of politics worldwide, but the problem is more systemic than that. It really starts with us and will one day end with us. Us being all humankind for all time. There are some that exasperate and build the lies and there are those who never look at all the evidence. Funny the hyenas came as a secondary thought but fit so appropriately to my thoughts. Thank you, and I always enjoy reading your comments. Winter Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Hello Tom, Thank you and I am very grateful. Yes, truth will always stand in the end no matter what our beliefs are. We struggle to discern the truth and many say there is not absolute truth and if that is true then it is absolutly true. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Reminded me immediately of my piece - Dark Underbelly. No words minced here. Lies and liars are given their just due. Truth will be victorious in the end, even if some battles are lost along the way. Now I've got to look up that long word lol. Great use of descriptive words Daniel

Hello Tom, Thanks for being the first to respond. Yes, the Prince of Liars will be exposed, and all truth will be revealed. By the way, sockdologizing old man-trap comes from the play Our American Cousin. It was a key moment in the play, one that was meant to draw laughter. This was the exact moment John Wilkes Booth chose to assassinate Lincoln while he was watching with his wife. Sad part of our history! Again thanks for your great comments and there is no formal definition. Winter Blessings, My Friend, Daniel
