On days of brisk wind, I like to see the autumn leaves -
bold and beautiful – like miniature colorful kites
flying up into crisp air, then descending to the ground
where they scatter and tumble sometimes
like tiny acrobats along the streets and sidewalks.
Enjoy the crunch of them beneath your feet!
Some of the leaves of deciduous trees are hangers-on
that stay dull brown until they drop at last in spring
whilst other trees shed their glorious gowns
becoming skeletons midst the evergreens of winter.
Savor their gold, crimson, and amber beauty
while you can, and be like me -
Don’t bother to rake them away.
Let those fallen leaves of autumn
linger on your lawn through winter’s chill.
They are doing nature a favor -
replenishing the soil and providing home and fodder
for small animals and birds!
