I long to lie like a sunrise sky upon the sea my flame a tender torch for your gasoline tide freedom fire to burn the brine from my eyes fluid movements our soft inferno in sorbet shades ~m ~e ~l ~t ~i ~n ~g ~ blushed in hush of dawn like fevered lovers my soul a bleeding rose rocked by your rhythm —but the blaze does blister a bliss not consumed a wailing gull slices wild air with sharpened wings she rides a woeful gale labor pains of thunder throb nimbus wombs hornet hive clouds cut by cesarean lightning birth swarms of stinging rains I wander a wind whipped shore of cloudburst gore with an ache for angst and a hate for faith in blue skies plaintive cries break the bones of my widow’s dream exposing my marrow my pledge to the Divine shallow I throw myself on my knees belly-crawling-ripples meet me with a rasp I long to lie like a sunrise sky upon the sea but sorrow creates a sunset tempest and now the sun sits so low I feel the sundown in my soul oh the slouchy sun just sits so low drowsy on the smudged edge of drowning barely above the waterline like my breath sea– I beg you meet me choke me take me by the throat with a kiss salty sweet sweep me out to your blackened deep take me thief my grief in grasp of your riptide’s greed

Thank you for writing on my prompt. Congratulations on placing. The depth of your write speaks volumes. It is so achingly beautiful. But it's your ending that really gets me. Those lat four lines, amazing. They're like a sucker punch to the chest. I absolutely love it. Your use of metaphors brilliantly captures being in the grip of grief.

Whoooa ! What should I say about this poem? Each line is a condensation of grief.... so powerful, so touching! Like the cloud ridden sky which may let out a torrent of rain, this will drown anyone in a deluge of tears, especially the last four lines. This poem is indeed a haunting whisper of pain... a desperate cry that echoes through the silence. The very opening line is so arresting. Where do I stand beside you and your poem, I know very well. I am lucky and feel proud that I could also be a winner in the list of outstanding poets like you. Sweet Susan, I am sorry, I couldn't read or comment on your poem earlier as I am a house wife, still surrounded by too many responsibilities that I don't even get time to respond to those who comment on my poems. I drag myself to do it out of courtesy. Hearty Congratulations on your well deserved trophy win.... you gifted friend.

Well, whether this got first, second or any placement in a contest it's exquisite poetry. That last stanza - oof! Talk about swimming in grief and drowning along the way. But my favorite line is the very first one. Poetic and sublime. My wife and I have watched a few sunsets here on the Gulf recently. Still gotta catch a sunrise though

Dear Tom, I can imagine how lovely Gulf sunsets are, but I'm sure it doesn't come close to the reality of its majesty. You're a very lucky couple to experience and appreciate Nature's beauty together.. such wonderful memories made. Thank you for your uplifting words. The first line is my fav line too, so much so, that I had to use it twice in the poem lol! Warmest wishes my poet friend.. ~Suze

It is always a pleasure reading your wonderful poetry Susan, you are a true poet... I love how your poem captures the tension between desire and despair, offering an exploration of emotional extremes, where the natural world serves as both a source of solace and a mirror to your inner turmoil. The great imagery and repeated motifs of water, fire, and storm reinforce the emotional depth and the speaker’s desperate plea for release from grief. Best of luck in the contest... Peace and blessings

My friend, you are indeed a humble soul. You were my first mentor here when I joined and your encouragement gave me the strength to take chances and stretch my poetic expressions to reach higher. Also, I learned so much about alliteration, assonance, imagery and other poetic devices by reading your high level poetry. I am in gratitude to you always

I got so high from the poetic hit this poem delivers; my breath caught with the feel from line 1 and I had no concern for its release as I continued to read, growing my free verse shivers. Oh, my. I don't know what happened to us. I admire your pen, poems & person and genuinely don't understand why our paths stopped crossing. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings without awareness of doing so. I pray you & family are beyond well. Excellent write, Susan ... CayCay

Dear CayCay, it's so wonderful to see you! It's been far too long since our poetic paths crossed. I know that you were absent here for a time and I've had my absences too over the past few years. Thank you for your heartwarming words, I'm thrilled to know my verse grew your "free verse shivers" :) Your expressive nature is admired and appreciated in the comment box as well as in your beautiful poetry. No, your kind spirit has never hurt my feelings, we've just been out of each others orbit. We are all fine here and I pray that you and yours are fine too. Warmest wishes my friend.. ~Susan

Dear Susan; This take on saras prompt is so very soulful and theres so many lines i absolutely love! Such as" I long to lie like a sunrise sky upon the sea but sorrow creates a sunset tempest " and " gasoline tide" and also the ending along with the alliterations and wordplay that goes with grief and sea! The aching emotions and how you've expressed in such a deeply moving manner is impressive! I think sara will love this one for sure! As youv nailed it! Best wishes always! Sending you light!
