Our Journey C Quote

".... could not stop for death- he kindly stopped for me-
the carriage held just ourselves and immortality."
                                    Quote by _ Emily Dickinson

Relentless struggle to take in air, my voice so rasp.
Monotonous effort, to force my body to breathe.
Agonizing, laborious striving to inhale, I gasp.
All energy spent, a body not worthy of life, I seethe.

Too weak to carry on, as hopeless as it seems,
“Could not stop for death, he kindly stopped for me.”
To end this misery, was only in my dreams,
“The carriage held just ourselves and immortality.”

A calm settled as images of my bygone years showed.
All pain diminished, as visions of heaven came to me.
The irony of death giving me life was blissfully bestowed.
Peace beyond dreaming on our journey to the cemetery.

Dear Speaks, your poem is rich with emotion and imagery. Though the mortal journey from birth to death is universal, it is as unique and individual as our fingerprints left upon this Earth. I loved the quote by E.D. (which blends seamlessly with your amazing verse) but I especially admired your verse "The irony of death giving me life was blissfully bestowed." Your last line is a grand finale to a potent and poignant piece. Fantastic and thought-provoking! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thank you Susan, some times I feel that I am taking dictation as I write. The words come to me faster than I can type them sometimes and I hope for no interruption in case I lose valuable words. This was the case with this poem. Your comment is so uplifting, it graces me with an air of delight and is most appreciated.

You'll give me a big head Robert ! I felt a bit guilty mixing my humble words with hers. Not every day one gets to collaborate with Emily Dickinson.
