for "MY Favorite Teacher Contest" of Karen Jones

by Khalil "The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind." The teacher I remember as the best stood out easily from all the rest. She taught creative writing. At that time, I had no clue when older how I’d love to rhyme. She’d have us sit in a circle, for that encouraged students more to want to chat. Instead of seeing others from the rear, we got to see the faces of each peer. In our giant circle, we would discuss our own opinions, and it is a plus when students can feel comfortable and free to say what’s on their mind; that’s great to me! After learning different ways to write, we’d write at home, and it was a delight to share our poems and short stories too with one another and get points of view. On work I handed in, feedback I would get. Critiques this teacher gave to us, and yet I felt this teacher cared for us because she helped us know our strengths, not just our flaws. Our teacher made class fun with games we played. With these activities, our teacher made us be creative, for she did not preach. I hope like her I’ve been wise when I teach.

A legend in King Arthur's time speaks about a wizard Merlin, who created a round table for King Arthur that allowed everyone in the kingdom to equally share their thoughts and ideas because of the shape of the table. Your beautiful 2nd and 3rd stanzas made me think of that fable. What a wonderfully creative teacher, so responsible for your amazing talent.

Dearest Andrea congratulations on your placement in my contest! I enjoyed reading your poem because it was like you held my hand and took me to class. The faces in a circle was really cool and I am sure helped to break the ice for some. Thank you for entering my contest.

This skillfully-composed, expressive poem really resonates with me. Yes, we teachers owe gratitude to those who taught us so much~~from books and beyond! Janice

Beautifully written dear Andrea. How lucky you have been to have classes in creative writing and poetry and a teacher to train you. In our syllabus, there was no creative writing until I passed out of college and no exercise in poetry writing, except a few poems to study. Now the syllabus is revised. All the Best...

I didn’t love my lit teacher but I did love the literature especially poems. Love the circle of peers! … students can feel comfortable and free to say what’s on their mind…share and get points of view…helped to know your strengths and flaws…wisdom and encouragment… Very nice, Andrea!

I spent ten years teaching, and many pupils remember me. Alas, my memory is not so good, especially when names are concerned. I loved your tribute to a teacher who left a mark on you. It is a well-constructed poem, and I am sure it will be rated high. Hugs.

Dear Andrea Thats nice you remember this teacher fondly, i dont have very fond memories of teachers from my school, however I remember some fun ones! And i remember one of my school principals that inspired me in so many ways through her speeches at assembly meetings and she really did influence me without her knowing. I love the rhymes and flow in this! I think you did perfectly for the contest! Best wishes always! Sending you light!

That teacher did not remember me years later when I found out her name and wrote to her. That made me sad, but I guess I just did not stand out to her. I hope i have inspired my own students the way she did me. i love teachers who use humor. Most teachers I have had were not very humorous, and nor did they have memorable personalities.
