5/9/2024 for Sonnet - Untraditional Poetry Contest sponsored by Constance La France

"One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life. The word is love." Sophocles, Greek Poet I have forever loved you my dearest. I'd nothing to give, 'cept love, sincerest. Throughout my life, the thing I held nearest - A broken heart, through weather severest. Life on this earth can be a heavy weight. When I am alone, the burden feels great. Trudging down the road, helpless against fate, Living is confusing, hard to relate. Aimless traveling, a bum on a freight, Growing so weary, it's gotten so late. Survival is my goal in decade eight. Soon, I will be approaching heaven's gate. When the blessed day comes, and I take flight With an angel's wings, I will feel so light.

Hello David, your poem with Sophocles' quote is a beautiful exploration of love's power. The unwavering love, even amidst hardship is deeply felt. "Love, sincerest" feels like a lifeline in the face of "a broken heart" and life's burdens. I loved the final image of taking flight with "an angel's wings" showing love's transformative power, even beyond life—a touching piece. Good Luck on the Contest!- Blessings, Daniel

Dear David, a very emotive poem so poignantly expressed. Evocative imagery of life’s heartaches and hardships. I especially adored “aimless traveling, a bum on a freight” -wow! That really captures the essence of feeling lost and adrift. The despair of your couplet is sadly beautiful. Your artistry shines! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thanks Susan, I really appreciate that! I had just heard an old Joan Baez song, "Only Heaven Knows", I think for the first time, and I think it put me in the mood.
