America's Homeless

AMERICA'S HOMELESS America is often called The land of milk and honey A place where anyone may come To make some easy money But if you will only look around I think that you will see The countless numbers without a home In the country of the free In this land of opportunity Where prosperity abounds Why must some be homeless Even in the smallest towns While funds are channeled overseas From a never ending list And our homeless ones go on ignored As though they don't exist In the greatest country on God's earth Men and women roam Seeking shelter wherever it's found But yet without a home So when will we become concerned And defend this noble cause To take care of the homeless And never should we pause To see that they are treated With dignity and respect To help them regain self-esteem And not suffer through neglect No longer should we turn aside From our sister and our brother But learn to walk beside them And show love for one another Curtis Moorman 3 May 1995

Thanks, Gordon! As always, your comments are among the most welcomed. You always have encouraging words that make me never want to give up writing. The deplorable conditions of having Homeless people is ridiculous and a blight on freedom.

Hello, my friend! It's wonderful to see you're still writing and visiting PS. I just came back a few days ago, myself. I hope you are staying safe and doing well...I love your poem. It's hard to understand how a country as rich as ours has so many homeless, hungry and impoverished people. To know that 1 in 6 children go to sleep hungry at night breaks my heart. Thanks for bringing attention to it. Love and Blessings, xx Rhonda

Rhonda, oh how so very wonderful to hear from you and your return to Soup. I have never left, but I have had some 'dry' spells where I didn't post anything for months. I am well and I pray that you are also. One would think the number would become fewer rather than nearly double since 1995 when I first wrote this 25 years ago.

Thank you, Line, for your interest in this particular poem. It has generated a new interest in the plight of the homeless men and women on American soil.

A wonderful reminder of the stark reality of the homeless, yet year after year there is more and more of them. I see this is from 95...10 times worse now!

Thanks so much, John! Yes, I wrote this in May of 1995. With 20 years in the Air Force and 23 years at the VA Medical Center, I saw Vietnam Vets who, in their mind, were still in Vietnam. Many were repeat patients and would go back to being homeless rather than be ridiculed. I stayed in trouble with the bureaucrats because I was so vehement regarding the lack of compassion for these valiant men rejected by society and no special attention paid to help them regain dignity.

Thanks for sharing this truth, though sad exposing grim reality. May we, by God's grace, do our part to reach out to them... God bless you.

Beata, I appreciate your comment(s). You always say the kindest, most meaningful things not matter what. That points to the Christian side of you. But you are always upright and honest to all the poets to whom you send comments. God Bless you!
