The Rose and the Tree
Under the great tree of devotion
Grew a rose of infatuation
Thinking of itself as the most fair
Because it’s scent filled the air
One night, the rose proudly stated
“I am fairer than all god created
I am attractive to the sight
And my scent is very light
Hearts beat when they see me
Unlike you, great big tree
You are rooted on the spot
And you never change a lot
You stay there and never roam
While they pick me up and take me home”
The tree just laughed and laughed
“Little rose, you are daft
You may grow quickly but you die as fast
A million of you I did outlast
We both started as little seeds
We’ve fought draughts and braved through weeds
A thousand of you were picked
Before I was even noticed
As I grew tall, I remained true
I never changed, unlike you
In a short time, you wither and die
While I remain, just standing by
In you, people find a passing pleasure
You are but a little adventure
With me, people live and grow
But it has to start up slow
It will be full with little tribulations
But they’re all part of the foundations
As we live and grow together
Progressing and happy forever
Millions of roses live and perish
Leaving souls with but a blemish
I am the tree of love
Reaching for the heavens above
You are the flower of attraction
Nothing more than a distraction”
