The Brooch Edvard Munch
Inspired by The Brooch
By Edvard Munch
This is a lithograph on black paper of Eva Mudocci, an English violinist. Eva was Munch's muse for several years but he often destroyed his paintings of her before they were finished, deeming them imperfect. This is done in a style similar to Munch's Madonna who he described as encompassing all the beauty of the earthly realm. The resemblance likely shows how he felt about Mudocci at the time.
You are beautiful
Yet here you are
No match for mortals
Across time or tide
Believing an object to hold beauty
When compared to you
All things pale
I name this print 'The Brooch'
Merely to satisfy your mood
You are beauty
Immortalised
To picture your beauty as mortal
To imagine it may fade or you may one day be dust
Is figment of imagination
Moreso than any artists dream
You are beauty
For all time
Whether you know it or not
