Notes About The Poem

The translater to modern English is actually English from the 19th century, so it did not go back to my original, but this is close to what I originally wrote, and you can see slight changes that needed to be made to sound more Shakespearean:

sonnet on my visit to the future

I can't believe all of the things I see:
the streets with such strange vehicles which wend
their way so  quickly like the ones that flee
like metal lions. Never have I penned
a sonnet on such vehicles and highways.
Never have I felt so unbelieving.
I hope that I might travel every byway.
Above me in the sky, huge birds are leaving.
of metal too are they. They are like magic!
oh, my, how women here show off their bodies
and how the men act causes me alarm.
and oh, the air. How can the folks refresh?
Tall buildings, so few farms, and such big towns.
So crazy are the folks here and their sounds!

Sonnet On Mine Own Visiteth To the Future

I can't believeth all the things I seeth:
the streets with such strange vehicles which wend
their way so apace liketh those gents fleeth
as metal lions. Nev'r has't i penn'd
a sonnet on such vehicles and highways.
Nev'r has't i hath felt so unbelieving.
I might not but tryeth to traveleth all byways.
Above me in the sky, huge birds art leaving.
Of metal too art those gents, which art of charm.
Oh, mine own, the females showeth their flesh,
and how the men art causes me alarm.
And lo, the air! How can the folks refresh?
Tall buildings, so few farms, and such big towns.
So crazy art the folks h're and their sounds!

Translated into Shakespearean English
using English to Shakespearean Translator - LingoJam
(I can't be sure that it's exactly right, but I am hoping this is how they actually talked in those times. To understand my poem better, you can go to Lingojam and just reverse the process translating Shakespearean English back into Modern English!)

Congrats on your top win for your imagining of Shakespeare visiting our time! It sounds like you had some fun using Lingojam.

It would be absolute culture shock to arrive here from the past. You gave some good descriptions of the strangeness of it all. I like the "metal lions" illustration of the vehicles.

I think it's very well spoken. It's hard to get it exactly right unless taking a class... At least it wasn't Chaucer who came back!

I never liked reading Shakespeare in high school. My poem shows why. Haha

You used a translation app? So, some of these words were not your own?

In fact, i think I will put up my original, so you can see how the words did not always rhyme the original way. Dang, I tried to do it backwards and now it's not working for me, but if you really are interested, I can show you sometime the original way I wrote it, and it did not work as a sonnet that way.

I wrote out my sonnet and then I translated it, and the words that did not match up, I needed to think up new rhymes for the ending words . You can do this with any poem but first you have to write your own. I just wanted to sound like I was Shakespeare!

Congratulations Andrea on your first place win. You have used the old English which Shakespeare used admirably well. Very creative....

thanks Valsa. i learned some interesting things. Like saying fleeth instead of flee, etc.

Wondrously crafted, Andrea, I truly like your light entries of archaicism in your conceptual present-day tell-tale format. Grats aplenty for your insightful share, "Lingojam," as this sorta form is of particular interest to me. I'm pleased to have yours immortalized my friend, as an instant Fave. Naturally, a suite compliment on an admirably penned win, Aloha always William

thanks so much. It was weird to put in words that were not used in that time and then have to rearrange my sonnet to accommodate extra syllables and end rhymes. Was sure a challenge.

Wow thanks, Joe. It was so hard finding rhymes to the weird translations of my lines!! They sure talked funny in those days.
