More Than a Glance

More Than A Glance
How is my worth defined, The wealthy facade I designed? The money and clothes, The people I know, Why not for the strength of my mind? Do you know where I reside? Places criminals won't even hide, Wrong side of the tracks Where most turn their backs No safer when you go inside... Do you know how I get by? Doing things that make me wanna cry Will I be okay If you show me the way? Since you believe I can change, I will try... One teacher, one student, one chance Your belief set my soul free to dance! I see knowledge galore The whole world to explore, Because to you, I was worth more than a GLANCE... Submitting to A Strand 1072 Poetry Contest on 02/12/2022

Meghan, this poem seems to me as a great companion piece to your poem "Blind Sight" with the common theme of looking beneath the surface to see the real human being underneath. When all we allow ourselves to see are the externals, we miss the gold mines deep within. "Why not for the strength of my mind?" is a particularly powerful statement. How little we know about the home situations and economic, racial, or physical challenges faced by the people around us. The teacher aspect of the poem leads me to believe either you knew a teacher who believed in you and your inner talents, or you are that teacher looking deep into your students' hearts and giving them encouragement. Probably both, I suppose. A Fav for me, I agree with Anitha below... keep inspiring! God bless you ~ John

Argg, how frustrating when a long message gets erased. Been there, done that, many times. I value your reply all the more, knowing you had to type it in twice. Blessings ~ John

My dear friend, I just wrote a lengthy reply and the system erased the whole thing! Basically, I was inspired by my desire to teach under-privileged and at-risk students, which I did at one particular school for the first 17 years of my career. I won't say it was easy, but it was the most rewarding and beautiful experience of my life, next to having my son. I recently received a message from a student now in his twenties telling me how much I influenced his life. Hearing that is priceless! Anyone can change and inspire someone by simply looking beyond color, race, gender, religion, class, & all other trivial bias. Thank you for reminding us to look into the hearts & minds of others! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Meghan
