Wren, wren, hungry wren, what do you see today? A lonely man with scraps of bread he could have thrown away. Wren, wren, little wren, what do you see in me? A smiling man who seeks out birds for his society? Wren, wren, with baby wren, how do you treat your young? You feed them well, as I once did and teach them songs you've sung. Wren, wren, there with your mate, you ask me where's my love? "She soars on higher breezes now, the kind we both dream of". Wren, wren, little wren, what do you see in me? A smiling man who seeks out birds for his society? written 24 Mar 2023

Oh, this is such a sweet, sweet, pretty poem. I love birds and like to write about them too. I just enjoyed it so much and can't wait to share it with my daughter, who once wanted to be an ornithologist. I know she'll be delighted to hear it too.

John, this is enchanting! Your rhyming is soft and lyrical, and the intimacy of your communication with the little wren is bittersweet and endearing. I am a bird lover as well, and have written poems about them often. I just submitted one, "Little Bird", to the next anthology! Nice to have read this lovely piece tonight.

My dearest PoBro, I am enchanted by the lyrical beauty of your endearing poem. I love wrens, but I especially adore your "Little Wren". So intimate, so touching. I relish the spiritual tone and the longing for a lost love; "She soars on higher breezes now, / the kind we both dream of" -wow, clutching my heart. The cheerful sociability of the little wren is a comfort to the narrator of the poem and to me, as your imagery brings me to the heart of this exquisite gem. A fav! Warmest wishes and hugs.. ~your PS-PS <3

Birds, seem to have a calming effect on people, and their chirps and significant sounds are a pleasure to hear and listen to. The estate we bought a much smaller house in, big we had for years, thinking forward, we made a wise choice, it is like a tree orchestra every day, so beautiful, there are so many different species of birds here. Lovely poem John my friend, hope you are keeping well. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Hi John, You penned such a good poem. It has a nursery rhyme feel to it, like a sing-a-long. I found myself doing just that. It was sad and heartwarming at the same time. The man and the bird needed each other. Thanks for penning such a write. Have a nice day-Alexis

This has the melody of birdsong, gentle and lilting, but with a touch of sadness for the man feeding the birds, looking for companionship after loosing his love, all described with your deft touch, feels very much like springtime :)

My own take on your lovely poem John: On the surface, a whimsical, gentle and clever poem written in the style of a nursery rhyme. I sense - rightly or wrongly - a possible nod beneath the surface to Wordsworth too; a poet who wrote about the relationship between the natural world and human mindset. He touched on the idea that man and nature are inseperable and that man is very much part of the natural world. I see all this through your conversation and connection with the wren. I'm wondering if this was your intention? Cheers - Gary

Cute, and simultaneously intriguing to tease out the wren's perspective on things. Nicely done, John!

A delightful rhythmic verse,John which gave me a smile before hitting the land of nod. I too still ‘stop and stare’ in their proximity. I loved the verse about feeding and singing as I imagine that you would have enjoyed sharing music in this way in your own family.
