It's Time To Meet Her Family
By Elton Camp
Egbert has been with Ruth a year
Then came what he surely did fear
“My family insist on meeting you.
It’s something we just have to do.”
“What if they don’t like me,” he said
“They will. Get that out of your head.”
Three weeks later, the date was set
Ruth’s family were going to be met
Cars in the drive gave Egbert a scare
Since her entire family had to be there
Still, he attempted to force a smile
“Hope I’m not gonna be under trial.”
Ruth began to squirm and stall
“Father can be a Neanderthal.”
They had no sooner entered the door
Than there was a twitter, then a roar
“Are you the one sleeping with Ruth?”
Asked a little kid, so lacking in couth
“Mom says she’s nothing but a whore.
That’s a word I never heard before.”
Egbert’s face turned cherry red
At what her little nephew said
There was nothing he could say
Her father was coming his way
He wondered how to make a stand
Remembering the term “cave man”
When the handshaking was complete
By him, on the sofa, Egbert took a seat
“Ruth is my favorite--just a child..
To mistreat her drives me wild.”
“Have you ever been married before?
If you have, I want to hear no more.”
“And since I haven’t been told
What kind of job do you hold?”
“How much money do you have ahead?
That’s major for a man before he’s wed.”
“However, it also seems to be
No marriage date’s told to me.”
“Grandchildren we expect some day
None better already be on the way!”
The visit, to Egbert, risky seemed
It was worse than he ever dreamed
