Since I had long fervently loved flowers, I had become a plant breeder, Striving to create more perfect blooms, to make summertime sweeter. My current task was the endeavor, at creating never before seen colors, In much longer lasting, richer blooms, unlike their fathers and mothers. Mine was very pleasurable work, that held wonderment and fascination, And frequently surprises as well, like the beauteous rainbow sensation. My social life was rewarding, too, and I loved giving the gift of flowers, As the sun gives pure gifts of radiance, to help wile away saffron hours. I'd ever thrilled to the bliss of nature, with a special fervor for blooms, Like the fervor of the mellow breezes, when visiting numberless rooms. A frenzied sun was shining longer, as green days of summer had come, And all around was joy and life, dancing to its undulant, muted rhythm. I was yet immersed in my work, and sometimes even worked overtime, As the pink robin is singing overtime, to make summer nights sublime! Since I was having substantial success, I was fascinated and delighted, Like hued aurora borealis fireworks, to which the whole world's invited. Plant breeding has endured, since near the start of human civilization, And the results of this refinement, are apparent in every wild location. Now I was cross pollinating the finest, of a massive volume of flowers, To breed the absolute best of them, for those enduring the most years. And also, for those that possessed, the most unusual or striking colors, Creating new and beloved varieties, unseen in all of the earth's years! I strived at it for many months, and I suppose that I got carried away, Comparing and culling from greater masses, of blooms each rosy day. Like fragrant breezes get carried away, in their quest to see the world, So much that they continue striving, even under the moonlight pearled. I began seeing strangely new colors, and blooms so much hardier, too, Like the fragrant floral answer, to the pressing question, "What's new?" The new flowers seemed much hardier, as one with no thought of dying, And leaving their wild colorful beds, and bluish-gray summer skies crying! I was elated with long sought success, yet absolutely wanted more of it, So, I kept on culling and culling blooms, as the moonlight culls secrets. How elating were the fresh new flowers, in those dazzling summer days, Like a classical song of great beauty, which varies each time it is played! Some had myriad colors, while burgundies existed where none had been, And some were pink speckled and ruffled, late undisputed beauty queens. Some were of a deep chocolate brown, like golden day at smoking sunset, Or the mountaintops gleaming in noonday sun, before the shadowy onset. There were also midnight black flowers, along with the candy apple reds, Each with a unique story of triumph, as they waved, smiling in their beds. I gloried in my phenomenal success, in that lusty season of bright green, Until the snows of winter came, and healthy, vivid blooms were still seen! Oh no! Something must've gone wrong! I had disturbed nature's balance! But they sure looked pretty coloring there, like a frog turned into a prince. Great masses of my new flowers, somehow stared down winter and won, Like silvery rain that keeps on coming down, in the very face of the sun! Several decades have gone by since, and my blooms yet smile year-round, And eventually they'll reach a location near you, creeping without a sound!
