Between You and Me
Stuck alone I was on a large lift once.
And that was indeed long ago, quite long—
When the world was young, quite young, full of bounce.
I groped and groped in vain, whistling a song!
Groping in the dark for the alarm switch:
All that I c’d wish for, all the while whistling,
What’d have lifted my spirits in the glitch,
Was my charming girlfriend—none intruding!
But that was not to be; no, not to be.
Now torn between discretion and passion,
I am sonneteering: Woe unto me?
No great loss, just a fleeting commotion!
Well, I left the lift—left with self-pity.
What a pity, though it all sounds witty!
