Poem written for "Eurovision Past, Present, Future" Poetry Contest

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can anyone tell me why does Eurovision exist? The show’s absolute rubbish, but some say it just can’t be missed. The acts are so bad, they’re simply vexing. Makes me wonder, “Why is the show still on the air?” Perhaps it’s time to give the show a long overdue axing? Thirty-seven songs this year; performers all wailed the same, None of them were remotely good, Yet, I sat glued to my television and watched in pain. Embarrassing it is, to hear those warbled words, I worry, in case visiting aliens, singers strangled singing heard. This year there were gormless transvestites, so ugly, they looked a frightful mess, But I sat transfixed and watched it, I don’t know why, I confess. Maybe I’m hoping just one act will be good, But few have been since 1956. So, I don’t see why I expect that they ever should. This year’s winner, was Nemo, a Swiss binary who ‘sang’ “The Code,” bewailing his journey to nongender identity, an operatic ode. Eurovision contest is loved for its naffness, but for me watching it was sheer torture, couldn’t quite stomach the brashness and crassness. Would rather watch reruns of “The Gong Show.” So hear me loud and clear, “Next year I vow Eurovision will no longer in our home be allowed.”
This is an earlier comment on Eurovision. "Once upon a time, we had a Song Eurovision. Now we have pure lust and trash. I have long stopped watching the program. I still recall Non Ho L'Eta by Giliola Cinquetti and Waterloo by Abba and many more."
Sara, I have viewed the Eurovision contest only 2 or 3 times but your take on it is spot on. It’s pure unadulterated nonsense! Visual and auditory torture! Good luck with the contest. Take care. Jim
Dear Sarah As far as Eurovision event analyses go, this one is top-notch. Several viewers feel frustrated and disappointed, and your thoughts capture that feeling well. Your insightful use of irony and wit, together with your reflective thoughts, makes this piece of writing quite interesting. You have a talent for capturing complex feelings and insightful social observations in your poetry. My very best wishes for the contest
Oh I do love brutal honesty Sara, and nothing like an impartial American to spell it out, and say it exactly how it is, I don’t watch it myself but living in Europe it’s impossible to completely avoid the Eurovision side show each year, a torturous affair, brilliant poem and a Fave for ticking all my boxes, cheers David
I was living under a rock, too, Paula, until our neighbor invited us over to his house to watch the Eurovision show. I came home and read a lot about it....evidently this has been an annual event since 1956. I agree, I'd like to continue living under a rock :-) have a great evening, Sara
Dear sara i dont watch this really but iv been seeing many post about it and seems like politics get in the way of shows too, when evil is too much in the world and so many are suffering. You have written a very sincere one here expressing your thought in the most seamless manner! Pleasure reading this. Best wishes for the contest
I agree, Ink. Politics seems to permeate everything these days. Sometimes I just want entertainment but that's hard to come by. I hate to say it, but I miss the good old days when humor was humor for humor's sake. I appreciate your positive feedback. Have a pleasant evening, Sara
Hi Sara, You express your feelings so well, and I can relate to all of them. I’ve four presentations and listen to music or there’s a lot of news to hear that on some good channels not all are good just like Eurovision. I washed it and that ~I’m not part of this world.. aliens might like this kind of stuff because they don’t know our past. I really can relate to this one. Was glad to hear that Israel no longer ccarries that despicable site,Al- Jazeera! Pangie Romios. A FAV,
