A Sad Side

A good man of great stature A presence so strong Head of a company, head of the family The place he belonged Now he sits in a care home A toy cat cradled in his arms Imprisoned in his own mind Void of worry or harm Life is a blessing that is true Yet is tainted with such a sad side Like the sufferers of devastating dementia Victims of the Long Goodbye!

It is such a sad way to end one's life. I see it in various stages every day. They're really supposed to be in the "desert willow" bldg, but it's full. I wish they would find a cure for this cruel illness. Thank you for writing about it.

Deb, this reminds me of how my mother suffered from dementia, I wrote a poem in memory of her called Mother and Dementia, it’s a terrible thing to watch someone go through… Beryl x

Dear Deb, your poem is so very poignant. An intimate glimpse into the sad side of aging and dementia. Your last line is gut wrenching for the person affected by dementia, and for family and friends devastated in its prolonged grieving process. A gem so tenderly expressed.
