Gummy Bear in the Sawatch Range
Just shy of tree line there were infinite shades of green
a few angelic cascades
a pair of bravado brown birds begging me for any old thing,
I tossed them a bit of chocolate amongst the chocolate covered ground.
They beaked the pieces and quickly flew off,
somewhat ungrateful-I thought.
Breaching the tree line, the apron was next.
The marmots proudly displayed high pitched squeaks and thick necks
They were rough and tumble and a bit edgy... but not unfriendly.
The picas were shy and so very difficult to find
(furry round headed stones against the talus gray sky).
After hiking a dozen switchbacks
I came upon a crushed emerald pond
granite lined and orchid shaped
living off winter's froth.
I decided the pond
wouldn't be nameless anymore.
I reached the pinnacle
and was greeted by a shiny gummy bear.
Looking like a gem and at elevation, it could have been.
Another hiker boasted, he was the second highest thing
in the lower forty-eight. (He was taller than me).
I was too tired to say anything.
The panorama was humbling/the air was pinkish and pure.
God was very near I'm quite sure.
I re-entered the forest, sipped a cherry soda
and devoured many unhealthy human things...
That night I slept as if I were orphaned from death.
Dreaming about chocolate birds and giant Apatite bears.
When I awoke, I was no longer the tallest of anything.
