Blog Posted:8/20/2021 5:50:00 AM

Frederick Leighton pre-raphaelite painter of lovely ladies * ,often had the dilemma of finding titles.

Do you suffer Leighton's problem wih your poetry ...which comes easier the title or the little song

I use names of boats I work on as my titles and match the form to whatever contest theme I like to channel my writes... it makes for a pleasant surprise to see where they take my thoughts :)

Usually titles are easy for me. Sometimes I will think of an idea which IS the title to start with. Most of the time, I need to write the poem and read it a few times to decide the perfect title, but I think it is fun deciding on titles, although sometimes they can be really hard to decide on!

The title, in a workshop like ourselves, the title can increase viewed numbers ..so if that is important, then it can be pertinent

Brian, yes, sometimes, and other times it is just there. Often, well most of the time really, I must write the poem first because at times the theme does not end up where I thought it would and then I title it, and the title should invite the reader ~Constance

Very often indeed, Brian... but all the more rewarding when the title makes me laugh as much as the poem (The Lying Witch In The Wardrobe for example). Of course sometimes the title comes first and I just have to write it (The Defiant Giant In A Robin Reliant). But... where I struggle, time and time again is finding apt categories for what I’ve written. I often cop out now and just tick ‘humorous’.

It seems to me that the title for a poem is a hint...a pssst...a come hither and read...an invitation to ponder its implications. For a painting it seems a bit obvious(unless you are Picasso).
