PERFORMANCE or when poetry became an art inc UPDATE

Blog Posted:5/26/2021 7:20:00 AM

PINSKY the former poet laureaute consultant to US Congress is perhaps the most notable poet/advocate ( present company excluded!) of the one aspect that raises poetry to an artform comparable to the experience of viewing painting ,sculpture  in regard to the  audience response thereto

Reciting a poem aloud the reciter as  the 'voice' of the poem, brings their own experience to it, changes it according to their own sensibilities with intonation & and stress,  the invisible italicized contrasts are more readily revealed (high-lighted?)& helps make clear the all important  "pause"

This two-way response to poetry is thus heightened in a unique one -off that can change according to circumstance, occasion& mood ,just as it does visually when visiting a gallery .

UPDATE if you would like to add a recited link as Line has done soupmail me or add it in a comment

So true, that's why I miss going to Open Poetry. I used to go to several of them, then Covid hit. Reading your poems aloud is a performance and the audience participation in listening to every words you say is so so gratifying and telling you how profound your poem is... makes you write more.

I'm starting to experiment with taking poetry to the next level ~ I would like to call it art. This recording is my first attempt and I'd be honored if you visited and left your comment: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/healing_power_of_the_drum_1312108#gt

Listening to poetry is like viewing paintings on galleries. Each and every listener/viewer has his own interpretation.Poetry changes listeners' mood according to the way it is presented when read aloud. Thus, by seeing- we feel and by listening we visualize.

I agree. I teach Oral communication in our Christian Academy and Bible College; and we actually read aloud poems. I'm blessed to hear my poetry expressed by my students (and they read theirs, too), as I do likewise before the congregation when I'm privileged to render a "special number" by reading to them verses/rhymes from my collection, praying that the Lord is exalted, and the listeners' faith edified.

Brian, so true, I am not sure how I found my voice in poetry and thus my art but one day it was there ... reading your own poetry out loud to others is so uplifting, for we know when to pause, what words to be spoken with more feeling, and which words need to be soft. I have been asked several times to read eulogies at funerals for my own family and others, I am eternally grateful to my Grandma for giving me the gift of storytelling and thus words to move people with stories, and poetry telling, peace _Constance
