Valerie Letkeman Poem
I languish on a sea of untamed thoughts
I am powerless to reign
The tempest within
Some say there are no new stories
But this way I have not been,
So my story keens
As an infant borne
In the bowels of a ship
Seeking stormy release, fearing the deep
Knowing not what is known
As the word winds sweep
Safe to the shore , where I land in a heap
Alone but with relief. Released.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
Today I tasted joy.
If fact I tasted my way through the whole day.
Not full course offerings or overindulgent dessert platters,
Just a quiet time, my housecoat, china mug and me.
My husband was here somewhere.
Occasionally he passed by my peripheral vision, nibbling quietly.
I enjoyed solitude, a quiet time with kindle stories and laptop friends,
A catch up time, soup simmering in crockpot time, a memory stone time.
I don’t know what tomorrow brings, and I am content in the moment.
Today I tasted joy.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
Today I am mindful of memories of warmer climes,
Warm breezes and cold lemonade and daisies.
I feel regret for things that no longer are
Or will be exactly so again.
As I focus on the memories, I press them to my heart
Crushing the sweet fragrance of their blooms and inhale
Ethos.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
I live for
Peanut butter and cheese sandwiches.
Toasted in my toaster...usually when my world is in slumber
None to to judge me.
No butter...decadent enough .
I slather the caramel coloured concoction
On warm bread...to the edges.
slapping on a slab of cheese
I watch as the heat melts and weds it to the bread.
Then I settle in to enjoy the moment.
It is then I realize...I live for the moment.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
When we were young
Summer stretched
In brilliant splendor
As the last school bell tolled
We spilled forth from
School marm’s arms
And greeted freedom
In the jeweled waters
of beach and stream
With picnics, sunburns
And warm summer nights
In tents
Listening drowsily to the cicadas song

Valerie Letkeman Poem
I paused.
I heard the wind whistle
The leaves stir.
The birds call to rest
In the great trees.
Setting down
My burden
(that old backpack called life)
I rubbed my shoulders
Relief at last.
I had not noticed
Numbed to the pain
Until this moment.
And the deliciousness
Of it made
My toes tingle
My lips smile,
My feet do a happy step
In that mindful moment
Because I paused.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
The geese are back
Although I haven't seem them
Have they settled in...unpacked?
The geese are back
Obviously didn't read the Almanac
Did I miss it, never heard a quack?
The geese are back
Although I haven't seen them.

Valerie Letkeman Poem
Who knew the distance to the seas
As hearts meander on the tides
Forever locked in memories
Sighing waters rush, cavorting wild and free
Ask not what lies, hidden from our eyes
Who knew the distance to the seas
Fearless as a feather caught upon a breeze
Cast about upon the brine
Forever locked in memories
We closed our ears to mothers' pleas
Nimbley dancing or' the rocks we climbed
Who knew the distance to the seas
We dipped our toes and screamed with glee
Counted the starfish, all seaweed entwined
Forever locked in memories
Life was short, with no guarantees
We worshiped sun, sand, salt kisses divine
Who knew the distance to the seas
Forever locked in memories

Valerie Letkeman Poem
Today I planted lavender
Not waiting for official news
Spring has sprung inside my head, and so
I plan to plant, refresh, renew
Ignore the forecast on Global News
Gather those buds, time will connive
To wither them soon enough, ya think...alive!
It is easy to start, get distracted, put off
Second guess, other people know best
But be my guest~ Breathe in the purity,
Life anew, sunny skies, fresh dirt
As I brush the residue off my skirt
I meant it friends, warm weather is here to stay
I've even put winters clothes away.
No April showers dull my glee
Spring is short~ that's old history, and yet
As I caress each perfect leaf, eager to feel sunshine sweet
I am convinced that I can squeeze
The lemonade of springtime, get a jump
On my wintry world~extend the time, so
Hold this potted plant for me.
Hold it like an offering.
