What More Can We Do

Haunted by the death of dreams and slaughtering of innocence but too afraid to dig up the bones and examine our own mistakes, we bury our heads instead, blindly following greedy leaders who give nothing but hollow words and meaningless moments of silence. I know I’m not the only one asking - what more can we do? As summer nears, sunlight stirs in streams, surprising delicate gardens with dreams of daffodils. Their bright eyes, wide with secrets, suddenly close, and their dainty petals wither until they are no more. Knowing these last days of spring rain will remain, summer retreats. Soon, their daffodil dreams will be just a memory. After darkness falls, all is numb. New roots breeding evergreen suddenly turn dry and dull. Promises forgotten, potential lost to pain - tomorrow’s tree weakening. The shimmering green of innocence is gone, but fiery guns are drawn. How can we forget while whipping winds constantly howl? How can we only cry as hatred’s bullets continue to fly? Smoky skies once boisterous and blue now choke our most cherished blooms. The silence of complacency is evil’s sickening laughter, Do you hear its rifle reloading faster? My blue tears turn blood red, anger gushes, flooding me from sea to dimming sea in this vast land of violence versus vulnerability. We are no longer free to dream, no longer free to tend to our gardens, to breathe in and measure each miraculous moment, to watch our fragile flowers strengthen and grow to beautiful heights. With head bowed, I listen to the silence of my tears falling where the flowers once grew. I can no longer hear the cries of the fallen with petals blowing. I only hear the howling winds of this never-ending nightmare, and again I ask, what more can we do? 5/25/22

Oh wow, so deserving of POTD, It's a fair question is your title, so many problems throughout the world face us today. I believe its an single mind behind all of it. And its not God, this mind believes he superior.. Poetry like this of yours, should be archived, to show the world in the future we knew all along it was all going wrong.

I am not sure what we can do, it seems though that many parent's and schools lack the guidance needed with kids today to teach them the value of life and consideration for others. Well penned thoughts for our times.

Heartbreaking...when a minority can hold hostage a majority and the cost is the slain bodies of our children...we have reached madness,

Rhonda, congratulations on your POTD. May your poignant question linger in our hearts and minds prodding us to think then gather together to blend our suggestions and our thoughts - to create new possibilities, new avenues, for these horrific events truly undermine the spirit and paralyze our hands. Thank you for your thoughts in this power filled poem! Blessings.

Congratulations on a greatly deserved POTD selection. Your opening verse is so strong. “Meaningless moments of silence”, is so telling. Do our leaders want a respectable silence for the victims or are they wanting our silence for their continued lack of action. However, to answer your question, I would suggest throwing each and every lobbyist out of D.C. Again, congratulations. John

"What more can we do ?" Instead of "blindly following greedy leaders, and then burying our heads." We need to wake up ! My heart is aching for those dealing with the loss of their loved ones. My eyes are misty. Your thoughts caress softly around me, Rhonda. Congratulations on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

God help us all as we look for answers, strive for solutions, hug our loved ones tighter, and as we mourn with those who mourn. Your imagery of gardens, trees, and smoky skies is so effective and powerful. Sobering and thought-provoking question, what more can we do?

Your poem is so poignant and beautiful. I'm sure Mother Earth would appreciate it, too. I cough now from the smoke of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado as they burn, and wait to hear blessings to those losing children by gunfire from lawmakers wearing NRA shirts.

Each time I see a news of shooting in America, it makes me shiver; how can the most intelligent, most prosperous country in the world be vulnerable to such a silly and avoidable trails. not once, or twice or thrice. The government must look at what needs to be done differently, 'you can't keep doing the same thing and expect different answers. A gun should never be available to anyone who thinks he can afford one.' it has to be used to national courses not personal whims. God Bless America!

Nicely penned Rhonda. Congratulation on POTD honors. When we sell games that promote violence, what else can we expect. We could put prayer back in the schools and discipline back in the home. Children learn by watching adults. It all starts at home! (IMO)
