What Makes a Mother a Mom

Sleepless nights Wiping noses Whispers in your ear to calm you Prayers and tucking in tight Rubbing in sun screen Wiping off faces Catching lightning bugs with you Feeding your dog, your goldfish and the hamster Standing endlessly waiting on your favorite ride Then learning by the gate that you have to use the bathroom And doing it all again Spraying you with the hose Telling you family stories to give you belonging More sleepless nights Living my life with Christ so hopefully you choose the same Baking cookies Teaching you how to bake Sure all six of your friends can spend the night Soccer games, football games, basketball games, and baseball Trying sooo hard to pick up the dag gone snake you caught Because I know you’ll be heart broken Becoming suddenly stuffed when you’re still hungry and wanting whatever Letting you want and not have everything Did I mention sleepless nights Praying you win Letting you fail Teaching you to drive, I’m so sorry I yell Watching you grow Beaming with pride And learning how to let go Oh,,, and sleepless nights Thank you God

Laurie this is so precious..I am a daddy and I can relate so much of this piece..you captured the love of being a parent so well. I am glad I chose to read this one because I just read your comments on my poem and your son seeing that chicken coming out was the most hilarious thing to read..great laugh..I think there is a big difference with being a father and a daddy..mine was a father..many times I wanted a daddy but I do miss him so..thanks for the love my friend..hope you are smiling.

Laurie, you must be such a terrific mom! This is a wonderful write. The love we feel for our kids is amazing. A love that knows no bounds, from the moment we know that we are expecting. And the worry. And yes, those sleepless nights! Love and hugs, Robin p.s. I never thought I could love a rat, either, but he was sweet, for a rat. He liked it when I scratched behind his ears and he would cuddle against my hand. RG

Toughest job in the world, at times the most frustrating, and at times the most rewarding. Good Moms are angels spending a few years on earth. Vince

As old as my kids get, I never cease having those sleepless nights. And they have kids of their own. It's part of the job. What a lovely poem, all mother's can relate! ~ Carrie
