Tucumcari

As the high plains desert scenery whisks by the burning sun heats old rippled windows riders jerk and sway to the click, clack of tracks towards Tucumcari, Gateway To The West. Sounds of the Old Wild West stir the imagination the great robbery by Black Jack Ketchum in 1897 near Tucumcari, New Mexico, where he hid the gold long before the old whistle blew at the station. Clickity, clickity, clack, or was that horses’ hooves galloping alongside the old steam engine tracks? As desert dust kicks up, I see ghosts of riders cowboys catching up with guns out of holsters shouting to “Stop the train! Get the gold!” “Next stop, Tucumcari, New Mexico!”, shouts the conductor humble buildings huddle beneath the mountain arroyos yet the people are proud of their Southern Pacific heritage for a heartier and friendlier folk you’ll rarely find. 11/4/2021

Laura, congratulations on your winning placement in the 'Railroads, A Historical Glance Back' poetry contest with your awesome poem 'Tucumcari' It is fun how you painted such a vivid old west image, I could almost smell the dust of the galloping horses ridden by wild bandits with their handkerchiefs tied around their faces! This was fun and well written. Thank you for your contribution, and again, congratulations on your winning placement! <3 ~BJ

Laura, what a wordsmith you are! I love how you weave a historical event with the sights and sounds of the Old West. I feel like I was there on the train, ducking bullets from the Colt '45s. I particularly enjoyed the line 'humble buildings huddle beneath the mountain arroyos'. Congrats on your win, my dear friend. Hugs ~ John

Thank you, John, for your kind words and thoughtful comments! I know this poem didn’t focus enough on trains and history, but it’s what came to me…we’ve actually been to Tucumcari, a fascinating small western town! :)
