This Bit of Wildlife
I walked into my cottage
For my morning coffee,
Amidst the sound of fluttering wings.
Swivelled my head from side to side
And spotted, on the window sill, a small bird
Tail feathers spread into a perfect brown fan.
It’s little feet clinging to my silver window frame,
One eye looking out and one eye on me
As it desperately tried to fly through the glass, you see.
Oh dear, so frightened, this bit of wildlife
In my cottage by the sea.
But much nicer than the spiders
I’ve been finding everywhere!
I gently enfold it in my softest kitchen towel,
Take it outside to one of many trees.
I open my hands and it flies off
To the nearest trunk, and then,
Quickly climbs up and out of sight!
