Thirst For Life 2
(Blank Verse Sonnet)
Autumn sun at noon lends wilting ordeal,
and scorches earth to wither blossoms' face;
the breath to whistle shrinks away to aught,
and throats athirst are choking with no spit.
As turtles, lizards, thirsty toads cry out
for rain, the birds begin a shelter search;
the trees dig deeper, leaves become dry curl,
and life performs a drooping dance of death.
Yet rain has come, a slow, obscure nimbus;
as showers mantle earth with warm, wet tears,
the dry-bed rivers rise as children splash,
and wakened earthworms twine back on the job.
We stand here hand in hand to sniff the air,
breathe in, and watch new life return to earth.
