A tongue in cheek poem - I dont follow football but have read comments regarding some of the ref's decisions in the final match

Fifa Women's world cup final 2023 Poetry Contest Sponsored by Mark Toney. 08/22/23

The ‘lionesses’ lost to Spain Spain’s players are quaffing champagne I may be unkind But was the ref’s blind My reasoning may be insane I googled the Penso surname The origin could be from Spain Perhaps there’s some bias So Spaniard's could Gaius From watching finals I’ll abstain!

Hi, Jan. Your two tongue-in-cheek limericks nicely highlight the response of some to calls made by the refs in the final match. Thank you for your support, and congratulations on your podium finish!

thanks Mark I was in 2 minds about posting the poem as it is a little controversial but was based on stuff I'd heard of on line - and of irrespective of a decision the ref is always to blame but the VAR incident was most bizarre:-) hugs jan xx

I’m not really into football, Jan, but I did watch a good chunk of that match, and I have to say (whilst acknowledging my own limited sporting knowledge)… ‘Nice legs!’ On a serious note… our goalie was stupendous!

Same here Terry, I watched about 15 mins of the match - 5 mins of it was waiting for the VAR verdict. lol. Yeah the goalie deserved the accolade she won. just sad for the fans they bypassed them at the airport on their return to the UK. hugs jan xx

Jan, I watched part of the event on TV in Ireland. The Spanish players seemed to be playing more aggressively from what I could see. The fondness for the Lionesses was plain in the aftermath here, and there was no immediate coverage of the winning team. This was a big deal over here. I have been continuing too work very hard and can't get here as often as I would like. Am taking a short vacation and that actually gave me a little inspiration to write. Work tends to remove that feeling. TTYL.

Thanks Duke I'm not into sport especially football but I watched a bit of the final - the decision over the penalty was interesting to say the least, have seen a lot of comment on social media hence the poem but at the end of the day the best team won on the day. hugs jan xx
