The Setting Sun

As sun sinks low at eventide I sit and gaze across the lea at open spaces far and wide and hear soft voices calling me. There’s something ‘bout this time of day when curve of earth the sunlight bends, and one by one the stars display; a soothing peace and calm descends. As silence falls upon the land my tranquil thoughts will turn within and ponder all the schemes I planned when I was young and full of vim. The silent voices in my mind remind me of the long lost dreams that yesterday I hoped to find but somehow lost in life’s extremes. The fading light from setting sun and growing shadows that it cast reminds me that these thoughts rerun are but a figment from my past. I now look back and think upon the dreams to which I ne’er replied and ponder where life might have gone as sun sinks low at eventide. April 23, 2021

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment, Marat, I’m glad you enjoyed my poem. It seems the older we get the more we ponder over the sense of life. John

I enjoyed reading your work. It has a calm quality to its lines. We can always think about what might have happened if we took a different road but if a person has been born again, the road they are on is the road on which God can use them unless they are going the wrong way and that does happen sometimes. Don't ever look back and want to change your life only look forward cause that is the only place we can make changes. Congrats on this winner. Sara

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments, Sara, your words are wise indeed. Truth is, there is very little in my life that I would change if I had the chance. I hope you have a wonderful day. John

I find the more I age, the more I regret. It must be a common age "thing." You put it into beautiful words: "...I now look back and think upon the dreams to which I ne'er replied..." so beautifully said.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments, Ann. I don't know if it's a common age thing or not but I know I do a lot of reflecting.

As we get on in years we often reflect on the choices we made and wonder if they were the right ones. Perhaps we'll never really know John. Hope your week is going well. Tom

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments, Tom. While I don’t regret the choices I’ve made I have these thoughts a lot; I guess that’s a sign I’m getting old. Hope all is well in your part of the world. John

"There’s something ‘bout this time of day, a soothing peace and calm descends" I completely agree. My heart is able to reflect and linger, when all the world is quiet. *Pondering* on what might have been- sometimes, yes, but never letting such thoughts keep me from embracing "what is" This is beautiful and tender, all at the same time. Hugs, Brandy

John, this is the kind of poetry that inspires. The enchantment of your words leads one to reflect upon their own experiences in life. This is outstanding and going into my faves! Congratulations on your First place win. Blessings xxoo

Thank you so much for the wonderful comments, Connie, and for saving this to your favorites. I often think about decisions I made when I was a young man (a long time ago), and wonder what life might have been like had I made a different decision. I'm glad my poem was able to inspire you to do the same. Hugs, John
