The Only Thing That Is Foreseeable

Why does one write poetry? To get lost in the solace of words, to encourage one to look at birds; or is it something much less communicable: a state of being, like a look in the eye, that is unreadable? We could talk night and day, about the how and why, but the only thing that is foreseeable is the poet coming back again for the ink and pen.

A question I've wrestled with for years but as yet have no definite answer, except like any addiction, one always goes back to it. Love the simplicity of this poem, yet it is greater than its parts. Enjoyed. / M

Thanks Maurice. Perhaps it's not "one" answer, but many answers.

I suppose the answer depends on the poet, and as you point out, the only way to truly find out, is if that said poet continues writing, and revealing. (: - very thoughtful composition here, Timothy. Always, Laura

Yes, despite everything the poet will go back to his roots...in that sanctuary where inspiration patiently awaits. // paul

It's a fine sanctuary to be, I think :) Thanks Paul.

Love it! The reason for poetry is the same as the meaning of life: Its reason, its meaning, is defined by us.

When the iris becomes the pupil, poetry becomes the teacher, at least in the foreseeable future. J.

What an insightful (and poetic) comment, J. Thanks! I do feel that someone (thing) else is teaching me when I write ... it's a never-ending process ...
