The Insomniac

It’s quiet now the world is sleeping, The passing traffic has slowly died. In the distance church clock striking, Loved one snoring softly by my side. House creaking, tap dripping. A dog howls, tom cats are on the make. The rest of the world is in the land of dreaming, Only the insomniac is wide-awake.... Turn on the radio, might drift off to some music, Try to read a book or watch TV. Go downstairs and make a nice cuppa Or perhaps some warm milk would be better for me It’s supposed to aid restful sleeping — It didn’t work I’m wide-awake as can be. Fidgety, itchy, legs getting restless, Milk given me indigestion, so now feel sick. I wish someone would shut that dog up And that tap’s dripping is getting on my wick. In a minute I’m going to strangle that feline, Why doesn’t she give in - let him have his way. Give another dig to the warthog beside me. Why can’t I sleep at the end of the day? Try to relax, feel eyelids getting heavy. Hear the church clock now strike four- Cock-a-doodle-do,it’s the rooster. Oh no! it’s morning once more. And I know by this afternoon I’ll be knackered, that’s for sure. Soap poet friends Wick- for those not aware means nerves or irritating.

This resonates so with me, Sylvia. So well-depicted; you've captured it perfectly. (I averaged 20 minutes sleep a night for 8 weeks in the Spring of 2016; I was "talkin' with the Man Upstairs," if you know what I mean ... Horrible!!!). Here's to restful sleep!! Best wishes, Gershon

Oh my!! Sleeping is something the body needs and when it doesn't get it, everything is out of whack for sure. I think we have all had nights where sleep is restless. This made me smile. :) Brandy

Hi Sylvia. I know the feeling too well. Very relatable. There's few things worse than being unable to sleep. Our cat keeps disturbing my wife and I during the night so I totally relate to the feline part of this verse!
