The Closer I Am - Loss of a Pet -

Sometimes I think I wish my heart was made of stone. That I never loved and the world would just leave me alone, because it seems, when one passes on, the other frets, so the closer I am, the harder it gets. The longer I live the more heartbreak shatters my mind, but life goes on, and time hands me further love to find. So the memory stifles the pain, but in no way forgets, for the closer I am, the harder it gets. I feel so alone in a crowd that just cannot understand, for they cannot see the linking, which continues hand in hand ... When all walk away it is I crying, and filled with regrets, when the closer I am, the harder it gets.

For sensitive people it is often hard to reconcile with a loss ! After I lost two of my pet dogs that had become part of our family, I stopped rearing them as I couldn't bear another heart break! Can very well relate to your feelings Lindsay !

Hello Valsa ... the pain from losing a close companion pet can be unbearable. They give so much unconditional love that it is hard to understand why we would go through it again - thank you Valsa - Lindsay

When I lose a family member and they all are to me, it breaks my heart deeply too. They are more than a pet, they are and always will be, a much loved member of the family. So sorry for your loss Lindsay. Emilia.

Hello Emilia ... what I feel most is, they want to be a part of our families. There is no such thing now as gone but soon forgotten. After three years I still miss Tommy terribly - thank you Emilia - Lindsay

I can understand how you felt Lindsay for when I lost my darling brown Labrador Coco to Leukemia when she was only three years old, she broke my heart - this happened about 8 years ago, I still have her photo as a puppy with her loving green eyes, no pet has ever taken her place in my heart. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

So true, Lindsay. A death in the family is always a hard blow to absorb, certainly not made easier when others don't understand. Sage words. Thanks, Gershon

I love all the feeling of heartbreak that is in this poem! I have had many pets and many heartbreaks when they have passed or even have had to be given away when i went to college or moved out of state.

We just lost our Princess this spring. I took her to the vet for her annual check up and he said she had heart problems which some small dogs get. She did not live but about three weeks. We wanted so much more time with her. I miss her so much. I can feel the pain in these lines. I hope that maybe you will love again. We still have Hairy who is hard to love because he is so aggressive. I think it must be a trait of the males of this breed but about time I think I love him he bites me. Sara

Great write! Yep, my wife, Ila, has outlived most of her friends and doctors -- losing a pet hurts a lot...they are family also. This is an outstanding poetic work. I hope you don't mind me taking this as a favorite. Joe.

Hello Joe ... I don't mind at all Joe, in fact I'm thankful that you have. Some folk do seem to get over losing a family member than they do a pet much quicker - thank you Joe - Lindsay

I feel your pain! The closer I get to a woman the harder it gets! (Sorry, but my sympathy is for the pet missing the freedom to live an happy life among its own kind in nature) Aloha!

Hello Rico ... I feel a bit the same about caging birds or animals in zoos, but dogs and cats are so distant now from their natural environment that specialized breeding has them in 'no mans land' now - thanks again Rico - Lindsay

I understand, I'm so sorry Lindsay. It took me three months before I could even go into my backyard after losing my fifteen year old darling puppy. My out of state friend literally came into my yard with me, to walk through that pain. It has been over two decades already, I still love and miss him, as well as others I adore. I told myself never again...until I saw the eyes of others pleading for one more chance at the dog pound. They are so worth our hearts, our memories and tears.
