The Bottle Collector

Who does she know? Nobody. No friends. No family. No neighbours. Not true. People live next door Behind grills But are they there? When you live in the world’s most expensive city Your needs become a threat to those who have something When you do not. She sleeps through the day, Not crying. Never speaking. Eyes blank. At night she rises In the cool And pushes her trolley To collect cardboard and cans. Alone.

Lansell, here in America, we would see similar people as literally living out of their shopping carts. They are the homeless ones that live on the edge of our society. Sounds as if the culture in Singapore is divided up into the haves and have nots. Life is unfair to some, especially to the elderly. You stressed this well within your poem.
