The Blue of You
Your blue eyes promised laughter,
mischief, birds in spring, hope and joy,
and I believed them.
Now shivering, I find myself bereft of smiles,
frozen here with you--in the heart of a glacier
with its creaking, cracking, cruel blue coldness.
I once dreamed that with the warmest blue flame
I might free you from the ice that grips you and
warm you and hold you and fix whatever was broken.
Now I know that you are no prisoner,
you are no victim of the numbing chill--
I am!
So, goodbye. I shed my coat
and armor and walk into the bright
blue of a new horizon.
