Son of David

Oh Joseph, thou son of David where is the trumpet sound your mission to proclaim Where may the words be found You, like David, are God's servant freed to serve him without fear The tender mercy of our God through your life we see so clear Son of a king most beloved protector of the King of Kings Who can tell what suffering your obedience to him brings Does it pain to think of her Mary, your betrothed, your life Joseph, thou son of David fear not to take her as your wife It is truly of the Spirit the new life that springs within and you shall call him Jesus He will save them from their sin Understanding, relief, a command from your dream, the first of three To visit and redeem his people you his vessel are to be Who will tell how you saved him at Herod’s butcher blade haul Oh Joseph, thou son of David will they know you gave your all cfa © December, 1972

WOW, you're the second poet in as many days that is a Christian. I didn't join in time to have a poem worked up about The Birth. But I will for Crucifixion and Ressurection. I love your poem. Can you imagine how Mary and Joseph felt as they looked at their Baby? He was their earthly Baby, yet their Savior and the Savior of the world. They must have had all kinds of thoughts going through their heads. Love your rhyme. And how your poem speaks to Joseph's obedience.

I'll be waiting for your Easter poem. I haven't written one yet, but I read a fabulous poem by Henry Barstow, titled, If Easter Be Not True. It so inspired me that I wrote one Christmas poem last year, titled, "If Christmas Be Not True." I take inspiration from the poem by others. Thanks for the visit.

I love it more every day. Yes, I do know that song. This Christmas I pondered on the shepherds and how I can understand why they were sore afraid. I would have probably fainted if a sky full of angels appeared and started singing. :-)

Yes, I'm sure that Mary and Joseph thought about many things, and entertained many questions, at Jesus' birth. I simply love the song, "Mary, Did You Know?" - especially enjoy hearing Pentatonix sing it. Thanks, Robyn for your visit, and for stopping to comment. Much appreciated! And, you will find a great number of Christians in PoetrySoup. One of the reasons I love it.

Thank you so much, Connie. It was written in response to a comment by a Professor who said, "Everyone writes about Mary. No one writes about Joseph. If Joseph hadn't been obedient, God would have had to change His plan. Someone should write about Joseph." Thanks for your insight beyond the words. Blessings to you, and Merry Christmas!

Beautifully penned Cona, love how you've depicted Joseph's feelings before and after the birth of Jesus.

Thank you, Lewis. Very little is written about him. But, yes, his roll in the life of Christ was essential. Your visit and comment is much appreciated. Blessings to you.
