Seeing You

It really happens, you know The swiftness of heart you read about in love poems Or romance novels peddling beauty and brawn on glossy covers Stacked deep on the shelves of abandoned bookstores Countless cliches coming to life as I stand motionless Watching you Experiencing you for the first time Heart fluttering like the winds of a monarch pinched between the fingers of a curious child Warmth, like the morning sun touching the lonesome beach, brushes against my face Muted, motionless, meaningless Words stall like a broken-down Camaro on a lonely highway west of nowhere Trapped between my brain and my mouth unable to proffer a simple hello Brushing back your hair, the color of strawberry fields You laugh with the others as the music serenades yesteryears’ youth Tomorrow’s hopeful Today’s carefree Gilded freckles on your shoulders Trapped by a pale blue dress Silently counting them, I dare not move Fearful I will fade away Your body sways with change of tempo The laughter stops and the untroubled minds listen as one A song belonging only to you My world folds inward Only two are here I see your eyes, Green like the land of Dorothy’s dream Searching me— Heart flutters Warmth brushes Words muted Taking your smile I fall Seeing you

Your poem is so beautiful. We all know that feeling of instant interest soon walking out the door forever - unless we chase them down.

Hi Jim, I really enjoyed the optimism and excitement expressed in this poem. Some of your similes are excellent. "Heart fluttering like winds of a monarch..." "Words stall like a broken-down Camaro on a lonely highway west of nowhere" These are very vivid and expressive. Also, your use of alliteration is effective. "Muted, motionless, meaningless..." Well done! Keep up the good work!
