This is a collaboration with my good Poetrysoup friend John Watt - thank you for partnering with me on this, John!
The eyes of the mind seek out logic and reason
with little to say about music or art
we need not portray the slow change of a season
apart from a graph or a temperature chart.
For such abstract magic we don't have a place
irrational mysteries gives us no pause
we much prefer order: the planets in space
in orbits according to Sir Isaac's laws.
The science of passion - the passion for science
eclipses predicted by three laws of motion
it seems that your artists are all in defiance
preferring to cling to subjective emotion.
My dear science, you are too confined
By fences of rules, by orderly lines!
Do you never dare to break barriers
To discover a beauty undefined?
The wild genius of Van Gogh and Picasso
The melancholy majesty in Dickinson and Poe
The transcendent music of Mozart and Beethoven
Pavlova and Nijinsky's sublime stately flow
Are not to be found in a formula
They are not recipes to dissect and duplicate
But are born from the glory of the intuitive
Of talents unique and intricate
How do you classify wonder?
What you dismiss and pick apart
Makes my soul bleed and my senses sing
I call the science of the heart.
