On Visiting Arlington Cemetery

Row upon row of white crosses speak Silently of the insane frivolity of war. Arlington is the stark reminder I seek Row upon row of white crosses speak Solemnly of soldiers lives at their peak, Their courageous voices heard no more Row upon row of white crosses speak Silently of the insane frivolity of war. written July 15, 2021

"Silently of the insane frivolity of war." I cannot imagine a better line; I agree wholeheartedly! I drove past Arlington once or rather rode past in a cab, and a silent awe took over my heart.

I have been there several times. I am especially moved by the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A visit to Arlington has long-lingering effects.

Well, I'm not a peacenik or anything -- there are times when we have to defend ourselves -- but those rows of crosses sure do make a powerful statement for the futility of it all. Thanks, Milt.

I would agree with you wholeheartedly, Gershon, but you can't visit Arlington and walk among the rows of crosses without feeling some of the things I expressed in my poem. Thanks so much for your thoughts.
