ODE TO OUR FLAG The Flag of the Great Nation of America consists of seven stripes of crimson red which stand for all the blood that's been shed. Mingled with six stripes of brilliant white denoting the purity that lead each fight. Backed by a vivid field of blue with fifty stars belonging to the fifty states that compile this small piece of God's big earth, it should be flown in a solemn manner. Often referred to as the Star Spangled Banner and stately names such as Old Glory, it goes before the men and women who are in harms way on foreign soil defending what we, as Americans, believe so strongly in --- FREEDOM! This flag is the most noted flag the world has known. Wherever it flies, it fills our hearts with patriotic pride. No matter where it is unfurled, we should stand tall and proud to have such a beautiful relic show the world that we will forever fight to keep it flying as the symbol of freedom that it stands for. God Bless America!

Thanks so much, Bob! It was an honor to serve my country and my God with my Air Force career. Now, as a poet, I am honored to be able to express that on Poetry Soup and place in contests with highly skilled poets like you and our departed friend, Ray Morgan. I appreciate the bond of friendship that we share and the dedication love we both had for our wonderful wives. God Bless and keep you - Curt

You have a wonderfully patriotic spirit throughout your entry, Curtis. I enjoyed reading it and would have ranked it higher if it had been written as poetry rather than a paragraph. I certainly admire your patriotism and your service to our country. Congratulations on your placement in the contest! Best wishes, Carolyn

Thank you so much, Carolyn! I am honored, first of all to have had the honor and privilege to serve this great Nation of ours with a 20 year career in the Air Force, along with patriotic men like Bob Hinshaw and Ray Morgan (deceased), but also highly honored that you opted to place my entry as high as you did since I failed to follow the directions properly. God Bless you and God Bless the USA.

Spoken like a true soldier and the dedicated American you are. Just another reason I would have been honored to serve under your leadership.

Thanks, Tom! Yes, all is well with me and I pray it is with you too. Freedom is a luxury that has been costly in too many lives. But long may the bells of freedom ring!
