Love's Retiree
don't love too much; don't love too deep
affection must be yours to keep
for when you give yourself away
you can't go back to yesterday
secure the fortress of your heart
keep drawbridge up and hide the chart
don't let the path to soul be known
there's no return once it's been shown
be sparing with your proffered love
or you will wail to sky above
for some will take and never give
that's not a way a life to live
give out in measure what you get
some limits are what you must set,
for I have found when I give all,
I set myself to take a fall
it hurts my soul to very core
when I am left here wanting more
the love I give must equal be
the love that others give to me
so this advice take to your heart
if you don't wish to fall apart
your love keep safe: a treasure store
give to the ones there at your door
don't love too much; don't love too deep
or you will cause your soul to weep
love's at its best when it's returned
when for its comfort, heart has yearned
this sage advice comes at a price
my heart was once a sacrifice
but what I've learned, I give for free
my name, you ask? Love's Retiree!
