Lone Hearts

This poem captures the excitement of two lonely hearts making contact for the first time, and their hopes for happiness in the period between taking their wedding vows to bowing out at death.
That time often comes when lone hearts
tire of their own song
And crave the sweet tunes of a distant
heart’s beat,
A beat that taken with their own makes
sweet music.
If two such hearts will but touch then
shall they ring anew with sounds most
divine
For while drumbeats are raised by the
strong blows of a stick,
Only one soft touch does raise a heartbeat.
Then can the twinned souls rejoice: “I have
found the one that slips out of my eyes when
I awake and back into them when I sleep;
the one that my eyes follow to the horizon,
and my heart beyond it.
‘Tis such a one as this that can stand at the
bottom of my heart and touch the top of my
mind. Sweet and vast be the years from
our vows to our bows!”
