Koala

~~~ He’s such a cuddly little guy, to lose him we’d regret. And though he’s on the threatened list he’s not endangered......Yet! Unique to East Australia but known the world o’er. He lives high up in eucalypts not on the forest floor. His diet is the tough gum leaves, he eats no other food, and that is where the problem lies. The future bodes no good. For they’re cutting down the forests at an increasing rate, and one can only wonder what is Koala’s fate? So let us hope the powers that be on logging, shut the gate, to save our trees and wild life before it’s all too late. ~~~ The Koala is a marsupial (not a bear) whose baby stays in the pouch for six months then clings to her back for another six. They sleep for many hours through daylight, and feed at night on the leaves of the eucalyptus tree from which they also derive most of their water supply. They need a large amount of these trees to survive.
Margaret, did you notice how they got rid of letting poets see more than 200 poems of ours. We have all our poems here but can only look back on last 200. I am sure I have commented on your last 200 if you had that many! Anyway, I await more work from you!! I remember this cuddly poem too.
I have a lot of poems in a book but don't remember which ones I have submitted so I printed of the list on PS and the BMW one was not there so I put it on. There have been a few changes since I last participated. Although I looked in every now and then to read some work I haven't kept up with the changes. Thank you for that Andrea.
I'm right there with you on every line, this is one of my great concerns as well. I wrote a poem called "Mr. Mankind" saying basically the same thing. Nice poem with a good message and great meter Margaret!
Margaret, I so enjoyed reading your winning poem. Congratulations. I have had the honor of petting one of these adorable creatures and their soft wool like coat is just beautiful. Timid beautiful animals that I hope the world sees the value of making sure they don't become extinct. I used to fly down under to Sydney once a week for four days and it was my second home for about three years. Beautiful country! Aloha, Connie
Yes, Margaret, hopefully Koalas will survive in the wild!!! I've been to Queensland twice (when I worked in Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu) and loved the Koalas clinging to their trees. The problem is that not all eucalypts serve for their diet. Loved you poem and thank you for your kind comment and congrats...Have a G'Day in Downunder...Gert
They were named bears because they looked like one when they were first noticed by the early 18th century settlers. Awesome poem Margaret and many congratulations on your win in Amy's fine contest >> James
