Sometimes friends or family members think they no better than we do about what is best for us. That isn't always true. An attitude like that can cause rifts in relationships and cause hurt feelings. Ever since my daughter's husband's mom and dad sold their home and moved into an assisted living complex and love it there my daughter and her husband have been thinking my husband and I should do that too. We don't want to live in a townhouse or condo style living arrangement. We like our own home that we have bought and paid for. Recently I bought a new car. My son-in-law tried to talk me out of it because he didn't think it was the best move for me due to my age. Well it's what I wanted to do and can afford it so I did. He follwed me down to the dealership and told me off right there in front of everyone. I was quiet and told him it's what I wanted to do so I was doing it. He was so mad and told me how stupid I am. He told my husband if he signed anything with me he was a fool. He thinks because my husband stays with them at night while I work they have the right to tell us what we can and can't do. Well I don't think so. Hope this doesn't cause a rift to widen in the family.
Did I ask for your opinion?
I don't believe I did.
Don't chastise me as though you think,
I'm some errant little kid.
You can offer your advice,
Politely state your case,
But when you find I don't agree,
Don't get in my face.
I make my own decisions.
The choice at length is mine.
If I make a choice that's wrong,
It's I who pays the fine.
Unless you're asked for money,
You've no call to stomp and snort.
Don't demand I give account,
Like I'm on trial in court.
I pay my bills, the debt is mine.
I know what I can't and can.
I know I'm old but not the fool,
You seem to think I am.
I appreciate the fact you care.
I really, really do,
But I let you make your choices,
Let me do that too.
It's not necessary for us to agree,
On each item on the shelf;
So just to keep the peace let's keep,
Our opinions to ourselves.
