Journey

On Santa Catalina’s island shores I step back in time to nature’s simplicity where sea breezes rustle the languid palms sparse brown peaks cradle eagles’ nests and red foxes hide in dense mustard fields. As I trek upwards along a narrow trail leaving the harbor and isthmus behind the morning fog lifts its obscure curtain to reveal a stunning cerulean blue sky that spans across the vast horizon. I see a variety of cacti, plump from recent rains hearty wildflowers dotting the arid canyons weathered posts remind of a fence, long gone while telling tracks mark the paths of bison. As I reach the summit, my soul is longing to soar high upon an eagle’s wings to skim the rolling seas like a seagull to free my spirit from its earthly bonds and unburden the trials that trouble my soul. Yet, I know that the Lord is ever with me He is intimately acquainted with my ways His Spirit comforts me along life’s journey for in it I see a glimpse of His eternal glory as He covers me with His everlasting love. 8/30/23

There is something so beautiful about nature that brings us closer to God. I have these same feelings when I hike. I enjoyed your poem, Laura.

I love your descriptions of nature, like 'sea breeze rustle the languid palms' and 'cacti plump from recent rains' - I grew up in San Diego and the contrast from the ocean to desert is so well expressed, there is much healing to be found outside~

You know, I just read a new poem that denigrated God, the Bible, Christianity. What a downer! Then I come here and a refreshing scent of faith and goodness hit me like a warm zephyr. I admire you Laura. This poem, is it based on your recent experience? It feels like it

Thank you, Tom! And yes, I am presently enjoying the beautiful California island of Catalina with my husband, Greg. We just love to vacation here, and are active as we love to hike and go snorkeling. Hope you are well! God bless! :)
