The story behind this poem The curiosity of many of my readers (many of them women) was excited in my previous poem ‘Passion in Black and White’ POTD 6 March. They wanted to know more about the ‘Magical Tree’ and Café’ in the poem. This is the beginning of the story the grandiose Banyan tree, a tree species I have always been drawn to since a child. It is magical and real, depicted in the photographs of me sitting under the tree. The tree is over a hundred years old and it majestically rises in the middle of the International Market Place Plaza in the heart of Honolulu, Hawaii. The café, in close proximity also exists and is known as ‘Kona Coffee Purveyors French patisserie’ serving the best coffee and French pastries. I trust you will enjoy the poem, the music and ‘Passion in Black and White’ posted previously, where you can follow me on a romantic, magical encounter…
Branches delve deep - concealing secrets - so hush Linger - abandon cares of a trivial life - no rush Sacred spirit residing in resplendence executes To tawny earth branches and to Heaven its roots: Whispering …’je t'aime’… A mere shadow of reality - no substance ‘tis true A life of materialism is - but a darkness whirled brew Rain puddles mirror its own spiritual visage In the still water the tree in its reversed image Whispers … ‘je t'aime’… Lost for words - in dreams - answers we seek Hearts submerged in doubt do still entreat A God inhabits - seek Him out through the maze Veneration to the ‘One’ to whom we praise Dismiss all uncertainty to the questions we raise Whispering …’je t'aime’… Ephemeral scepticism gone - here swathe in sanctuary Blossoming love in captivating honey dew ecstasy Untouched by this mad world - lovers dare connect intentional thought to boldly declare ‘je t'aime’… “Excusez-moi mademoiselle is this seat taken”? In lisping French pronunciation – you inquire The look in your hazel eyes of carnal desire combusts sparks into a blaze of heavenly fire Whispering …’ je t'aime’…
Foot note - About the Mystical Banyan Tree. The massive banyan tree is the national tree of India, also called Indian or Bengal fig. Considered sacred in India and can be seen near a temple or religious centre giving shade to travellers in very hot summer months. In fact Buddha was said to have received his enlightment under a tree like this.. In the Bhagavat Gita, Krishna said, "There is a banyan tree which has its roots upward and its branches down, and the Vedic hymns are its leaves." (Bg 15.1) Here the material world is described as a tree whose roots are upwards and branches are below. An observer will notice that the Tree reflection in water is upside down. The branches going downward and the roots upward. In similarly, it is the material world that’s a reflection of the spiritual world. The material world is but a shadow of reality. In the shadow there is no reality or substantiality, but from the shadow we can understand that there is substance.

A Beautiful piece. I love the Banyan tree background as well, especially the reference to Kona Coffee. I am a triathlete and Kona is where the national championships are held

A strange mystical poem with intimations of the sensual to come; a metaphysical prelude to the physical of the following parts of the trilogy. (How’s that for pretentious verbosity - mine!) Seriously Maria, this poem is intriguing and impressive.

OMG Maria, I am so glad I didn't miss this marvel! It is difficult to see how truly magnificent and beautiful this tree is because it is so large. Your poem compliments its beauty and honor bestowed upon it through the ages. This is going into my faves. My husband grew up swinging on the Banyan vines. : )xxoo Romance personified! You look gorgeous!

Thank you Andrea, glad that you saw that, it was my intention to do exactly that. If you care to read Demetrios's comment below, I think he summed it up better then I did. If you get a chance to to visit Hawaii in the near future, do visit this shopping centre. The tree is certainly worth the trip....Maria xxx

Kind of reminds me of a Glamourous M, but then again 'female fan club', I'm going with Special Agent Carmen San Diego. Very handsome 'other' fan in the background, who should be waving his fan over you. Love the poem (as I do all your stories), photo's the best though.

"Here the material world is described as a tree whose roots are upwards and branches are below." This is fascinating, and educational for me Maria. I will have to take a look at "Passion in Black and White" next! "Rain puddles mirror its own spiritual visage/In the still water the tree in its reversed image" Loved that little moment, and thank you for the explanation! Without having read the explanation you did great on elucidating the spiritual world in the beauty of the tree's reflection. Always, Laura

'Elucidating the spiritual world', I love that, I'm learning new words every day. the beauty of being on this site. Laura thank you for appreciating this poem, I felt it warranted an explanation in the footnote about this beautiful tree and its spiritual connections. I really appreciate your support....Maria xx

A beautiful sensually romantic poem, laid bare by the story behind it and the added informatory notes, Maria. You are definitely inspired by your travels and search for knowledge. ~ The song "Je t'aime moi non plus" by Jane Birkin was gifted to me by "Rita" who brought it to me in person from Switzerland in 1970(the song was not available in Malta then). // Regards // paul

Yes I can well understand that after reading this article Paul. It would have been banned in Malta as well then?...."Je t'aime… moi non plus" (French for "I love you… neither do I") is a song written by Serge Gainsbourg, for Brigitte Bardot in 1967, who dueted in an early version not released until 1986. In 1969, Gainsbourg recorded the most well known version with Jane Birkin. The duet reached number one in the UK, and number two in Ireland, and was banned in several countries due to its overtly sexual content. In 1976, Gainsbourg directed Birkin in an erotic film of the same name. Trust me to go pick the sexiest song written ever lol....Maria :)

Such sensuality from a tree, only your imagination could create that...Who is that man? I can't make out who he is? Someone famous in OZ? Some great lines in your poem occupied by a very sensual song..

Lol.. yes my fertile imagination again. And as for the song, didn't even know this when I picked it....was banned in several countries due to its overtly sexual content. In 1976, Gainsbourg directed Birkin in an erotic film of the same name. Trust me to go pick the sexiest song written ever lol....Maria :)

Moi aussi je t'aime mon amie Maria! When I was in Hawaii, I met some local people who told me stories about this tree and how its roots are. "connected " with the spiritual world of the islands! Your poem is certainly inspired by the " magical " pwers of this tree thus bringing to the " upper world " truths hidden in the " Mystical underworld ". A fav from me for the " Mystique" de ton poem ma cher amie, Maria! Je t'aime!xxx
