It Never Really Mattered

I look back to the sixties, standing for a cause Change society, from the world remove the flaws How the seeds of discontent were scattered We walked with a purpose, make a statement for the land An urge to change the world, a time to make a stand With the apathy today, I guess it never really mattered We've lost our sense of urgency, our drive has gone away Democracy is dying as we approach our darkest day Has liberty been murdered, have our dreams all been shattered We can rise above the garbage that has been thrown in our face We can stand together to make the world a better place If we accept social injustice, then it never really mattered We see the times are changing not for better but for worse Dissension becomes the blessing, patriotism becomes the curse Our constitution has been raped and left all bruised and battered Do we hang onto our standards with our backs against the wall Do we bow our heads like puppets as we watch our country fall Then for all our souls who died for freedom, it never really mattered. I will stand for liberty and justice. I will die for freedom's sake I will stay a patriot though the earth beneath me shake I will salute our flag though she be torn and tattered If we allow the powers to destroy our democratic dream If we let them undo the constitution that once was held in high esteem Then our liberty is over and it never really mattered.

Unfortunately, too many times, power corrupts. Our founding fathers had no idea how many times our constitution would be misinterpreted and abused...

We lost prayer and the Pledge Of Allegiance from our schools and most of our society many years ago. And like you've said, it's only getting worse. Nicely written!...Milt

I've often wondered what happens to people when they get into power. They used to be people like us seeing the same evils creep into society. You did an amazing job my friend and should send it to the president. I sent my Requiem for America (on pg 3) and got a response which didn't really say anything but let him know how people are feeling. Do they care?

It pleases me that people still think about these things.. I worry that someday, no one will care anymore. Take care. Glad I checked up on you, I've missed your work.

I hear you loud and clear Vince. It's amazing how the media is on every side but our own country's right along with the top poiticians. What the hell were people thinking when they voted them in? Now just try and get them out! sheesh. I'll bet the same ones will be in power to finish killing the democratic republic next year also.... because I have the utmost faith in the stupidity, apathy and lack of common sense of the american voter

An amazing poem that reaches to the heart of the ills that beset so many of us who live in the Engish speaking nations. I wonder what caused the "apathy" but it will eventually take our freedoms away. I need to fave this Vince, so glad I found you when you visited my blog. Have a wonderful Christmas, I'm looking forward to being a frequent visitor here! :)

None of us can know where this change is taking us exactly, but it seems to have a lot to do with Love. Love with a big L. Love a good deal grown up from the days of Haight Ashbury and Woodstock, but no less indebted to the activism of those times. Love that underlies the constants... is Love like this man speaks as he reveals how the 99% must finally be about all 100%.

I think it mattered lots. I, for one, was inspired by the spirit of the sixties, but unfortunately didn't (because of the tween-timing of my birth) have much chance to express until now that occupy has become an interesting word. Would like to share quote from my sis, but not enough letters left, so at the risk of being... whatever... will post in a separate 'ment, preeshya Vince, namaste ~N
