Innocence

We called Jimmy strange; we teased him in play, most of the time he'd laugh our cheek away. We'd dare him to play pool; always loser pay! So we played pool for nothing each day. One night a stranger who did not understand, called to the publican we all should be banned. He took Jimmy's cue; he saw what's going on, telling us what we’re doing to Jimmy is wrong. The stranger was right, but Jimmy don't mind, in his eyes we’re his friends; he saw us as kind. The stranger exposed his friendship; Jimmy ran home. We argued our point and left the stranger alone. Late into that night, a tale of disbelief, “Come down to the hotel for its full of grief. Jimmy's locked in a room and somewhere he’s got a gun that he’s fired. The stranger’s been shot!” With the innocence lost of Jim’s simple mind. If I’d turned my cheek and just stayed behind, there’d still be the innocence. I’d have calmed Jimmy down. Murder crushed out the life of my country town. The law is in place; Jimmy can't understand. Shouting in the hallway baffled him with demand. Society must take to Jim where it all seems surreal. This life he'll leave behind for one of bars of steel. I stood at the doorway where Jim could hear my voice. I called “Put the gun down. Jim there’s no other choice.” Jim turned the key to let me through the door, then I heard the blast and the thump on the floor. With the innocence lost of Jim’s simple mind. If I’d turned my cheek and just stayed behind, there’d still be the innocence. I’d have calmed Jimmy down. Suicide crushed out the life of my country town.

Oh poor little man. That's such a shame. It's crushing to know someone so innocent who cannot understand the ways of this world. And this world often does kill those who cannot understand it. Jimmy did not kill himself, the world did. A fine write in honor of the innocent life of a young friend. God Bless, JB

Hello Judy ... over a long period of time, people like Jimmy feel accepted no matter what and when friends get berated, feel it's their duty to protect them - thank you once again Judy - Lindsay

gosh, you went to a DARK place this time. I have seen movies of similar theme. Of Mice and Men comes to mind, but others that were more similar to THIS story line. It's so sad that society cannot understand how to behave with certain individuals. And there are many of them, more than ever today due to increase of autism rates.

Hello Andrea ... you make a good point with the autism. Children appear to have so many disorders ranging from allergies to mental disorders in today's world. What is causing this, I have no idea. Thank you for the rest of your comment also Andrea - Lindsay

Poor Jim, a sad tale of people interfering and making trouble for nothing, they feel left out as they haven't thought the way you had at first. Well the stranger died of mere interference and poor Jimmy because of his innocence and simple mind. You write beautifully Lindsay. hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Hello Jennifer ... the idea for this poem came from an incident that thankfully didn't end like this but could have for a gun was involved and the pub where it began became under siege. Thankfully it was sorted out with no one getting hurt - thank you Jennifer - Lindsay

I often wonder when someone commits an atrocity... is there a hidden back story that we’ll never know? A disturbing but all too real depiction, very well written, Lindsay. Terry

Thank you Terry ... we hear on the news so many alarming outcomes but rarely the reason, and that's where the trouble starts - thank you Terry - Lindsay

But when government funded asylums the people complained of unjust treatment, so the bottom line has yet to be reached. keep on it, Lindsay!
