Influence of An Angel

They gathered there that fateful night, To discuss the plans of a wondrous flight, That would take them far from chains that bind, Where freedom is more than thoughts of the mind. But, an air of uncertainty filled the hall, And the penalty for treason meant death to all, That gathered there to pen their name, On that parchment of independence proclaimed. Then a bold voice cried, "Sign My Friends! For that document tells of the rights of men, Whose souls have a yearning to be free, To search for their dreams and destiny. And God has given us this great land. What more do we need to understand, That to fight and die for a noble cause, Is a grand opportunity if ever was." Yes, the strangers voice rang loud and clear, As he spoke to their hearts more than the ear. Then he fell with exhaustion into his chair, And when some ran to thank him, he was not there. Though the door was bolted and a guard stood strong, It seemed that the stranger had vanished, was gone. But, the words he spoke were like bolts of light, And all in attendance knew he was right. Then they signed their names without a fear, And seventeen seventy-six was the year. Yes, they'd taken the bull by the horns, And in that moment a nation was born.

Thanks, Robin. I glad you said that because my intention was to make people think about the impact of the words. Our nations birth, I believe , was influenced by God as were the founding fathers. I'm so happy you liked it..... Robert.

You write as if you were LDS, Robert. That is a strong feeling in the Mormon faith, that God influenced the early history of our country. I really enjoyed how you wrote this poem. Making it more than just the mere historical telling of this most important event!

Hi, Andrea. I didn't know that about the Mormon faith. I do know that the majority of the founding fathers of this nation believed in divine intervention. Thanks so much for your comments on how this poem was written. I always appreciate your insight, because you notice far more than just the message or the poem. You are a great asset to Poetry Soup and I am happy to be your friend. Luv.... Robert.

Well, Sara. I seem to remember reading a story about this a long time ago, but, just can't remember where. No, I don't suppose they would allow this one in school. Glad you liked it.... Robert.
